Thomas Markle Sr. faces an investigation in the Philippines over alleged child sexual abuse material. His now-deceased former wife, Roslyn Loveless, reportedly sent a warning letter received by British police in 2019. Meghan says she was informed of the allegations, assured they were being investigated and kept her distance to protect her children. In December 2025, she reportedly confronted her father in a private letter. Now, Thomas Markle Jr., who spent years attacking Meghan, has apologised for defending their father.
Thomas Markle Sr. strongly denies the allegations, which remain unproven. But the revelations of the past 48 hours have exposed an uncomfortable failure of British journalism. For all its investigative reporters, palace insiders, anonymous sources and relentless leaks, the press seemingly knew little about the serious allegations behind Meghan’s estrangement from her father. Yet that never stopped journalists from spending nearly a decade attacking her for keeping her distance, without knowing the full story.
Roslyn Loveless – The Warning That Predated the Scandal
In May 2019, Roslyn Loveless—Thomas Markle Sr.’s former wife and the mother of Samantha Markle and Thomas Markle Jr.—publicly criticised her ex-husband’s behaviour as a father. She warned against allowing him access to Meghan’s children. She called him an “awful father” and said Meghan would be a “fool” to have him in her life.
Her warnings predated the current allegations by seven years.
On 24 October 2026, Page Six reported, citing sources, that Roslyn was responsible for sending the historical warning letter to British authorities. The Metropolitan Police has confirmed receiving a letter in January 2019, though it has not publicly identified its author.
Thomas Markle Sr.’s first wife sounded the alarm about his alleged child abuse years before he became the subject of a police investigation, multiple sources tell Page Six.
Roslyn Loveless, who was married to the former TV lighting director from 1964 to 1975, sent a letter detailing allegations about her ex-husband that found its way to London’s Metropolitan Police in 2019, we are told.
Although it’s not yet known what was in the letter, it was subsequently sent to Markle’s daughter, Meghan, by police. The Duchess of Sussex has said she was “deeply distressed” by the claims.
The Page
Why did Thomas Markle’s complaints about Meghan receive years of sympathetic reporting while his former wife’s warnings attracted considerably less sustained attention? The press repeatedly questioned Meghan’s character. How thoroughly did it examine the character of the man whose grievances it was promoting?
The media had reasons to examine Thomas Markle more critically long before October 2026.

December 2025: Meghan Confronts Her Father
In December 2025, Thomas Markle was hospitalised in the Philippines and underwent a leg amputation. Meghan’s representatives confirmed she had contacted her father while criticising the Daily Mail’s involvement in his private medical circumstances.
The Sun on Sunday now reports that Meghan sent him a letter addressing allegations of child sexual abuse and informing him that he would never meet Archie and Lilibet. According to the report, hospital management delivered the letter and obtained confirmation of receipt.
THE Duchess of Sussex told her estranged father she knew he had abused young girls in a letter she sent him last year, The Sun on Sunday can reveal.
Meghan, 45, told 82-year-old Thomas Markle Snr it would be the last time he ever heard from her — and that she would never allow him to meet his grandchildren.
It is understood she accused him of sexually abusing children and said that the authorities were aware of his vile behaviour.
Meghan’s Statement (The Sun, Matt Wilkinson, Royal Editor)
At the time, Caroline Graham was reporting from Thomas Markle’s hospital bedside, documenting his medical condition and estrangement from Meghan. In an article published on 14 December 2025, Graham openly acknowledged the close friendship she had developed with him.

Describing Meghan’s letter, Graham wrote:
“He shared nothing about the contents. I asked no questions.”
Yet immediately afterwards, Graham expressed hope that the letter might lead to reconciliation between Meghan and her father. She also questioned why Meghan had not travelled to the Philippines to visit him. This reflects a recurring theme among royal journalists: Meghan should reconcile with her father, Meghan should visit him, and Meghan should allow him to see her children. For years, these demands were repeated without any real consideration of why she had chosen to keep her distance.
That makes it entirely reasonable to ask: Did Thomas subsequently tell Graham anything about Meghan’s letter? Did she ever learn what it contained? And what did the Daily Mail know while continuing to publish his appeals for reconciliation?
Given her extraordinary access to Thomas Markle, the Daily Mail’s December 2025 reporting deserves renewed scrutiny in light of The Sun’s latest revelations.
Thomas Jr.’s Apology: “I Have Been Protecting the Wrong Person”
The Sun on Sunday also published Thomas Jr.’s apology to Meghan. The apology came after Thomas Jr. publicly accused his father of possessing child sexual abuse material allegedly discovered among belongings in the Philippines. He says he reported the material to authorities, prompting an investigation.
“I’m so, so sorry, Meghan… I have been protecting the wrong person for the past nine years,” Thomas Jr told The Sun on Sunday.
Nine years of interviews, accusations and public attacks cannot be undone with a single apology. Thomas Jr. helped portray Meghan as a cruel daughter who abandoned her family, and journalists repeatedly gave him a platform to do so.
His change of heart also deserves scrutiny. Did Thomas Jr. receive payment for his latest interviews with The Sun? If so, how much? After years of publicly criticising his sister, it is reasonable to question whether his relationship with the tabloids has really changed.
Nevertheless, his revelations may finally put an end to the relentless demands by the media and deranged critics that Meghan should reconcile with her father. She has spent years being asked whether she would visit him, introduce him to her children or attend his sickbed. None of those decisions should ever have been anyone else’s business.
Meghan does not need to reconcile with Thomas Markle, attend his funeral or offer the public another explanation for her estrangement. And if Thomas Jr. can finally acknowledge that he defended the wrong person, when will the journalists who spent nine years amplifying his attacks acknowledge their own roles?
The Sun vs. the Daily Mail: A Tabloid Rivalry With Royal Connections
An interesting media battle appears to be unfolding between two of Britain’s most powerful tabloid empires. The Sun, owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp through News UK, has published Thomas Markle Jr.‘s allegations, his apology to Meghan and details of her December 2025 letter confronting their father. Meanwhile, the Daily Mail, controlled by Lord Rothermere’s DMGT, continues reporting Thomas Sr.’s denials and competing family accounts.
What makes this rivalry particularly interesting is Caroline Graham’s longstanding connection to the royal establishment. Graham wrote Camilla: Her True Story in 2001, drawing on sources close to the then Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles. She subsequently developed an unusually close relationship with Thomas Markle, becoming one of the principal journalists documenting his estrangement from Meghan.
The Sun’s latest exclusives have now challenged years of sympathetic Daily Mail coverage. Given Graham’s history of reporting on Charles and Camilla, alongside her extraordinary access to Thomas Markle, questions about the relationship between royal reporting, privileged access and journalistic independence deserve closer examination.
The Daily Mail, meanwhile, has published an exclusive interview in which Thomas Markle Sr. admits paying for sex in Southeast Asia while vehemently denying allegations of child sexual abuse. The newspaper has also published Samantha Markle’s claims that her brother fabricated the allegations for financial gain, alongside her suggestion that evidence could have been tampered with. Neither accusation has been substantiated.

Caroline Graham and the Daily Mail: What Did They Know, and When Did They Know It?
So, where does that leave Caroline Graham? Graham spent years cultivating a close relationship with Thomas, reporting on everything from his family disputes to his medical emergencies. She was even present when Meghan’s December 2025 letter arrived at his hospital bedside.
What did Graham know about Thomas Markle’s past, and when did she know it? Did she investigate Roslyn Loveless’s earlier warnings? Did Thomas ever disclose the contents of Meghan’s letter? And what about the royal establishment that watched Meghan endure years of public pressure to reconcile?
The Sun may have beaten the Daily Mail to these revelations, but the bigger question is why the British press spent so many years scrutinising Meghan instead of properly questioning the man whose story it kept promoting.
