The story surrounding Meghan Sussex’s estrangement from her father has taken another major turn. Hours after the Metropolitan Police said it was conducting internal enquiries to determine whether officers were involved in passing Meghan a letter containing disturbing allegations about Thomas Markle Sr. in 2018, The Sun reported that the letter does exist and says it has seen a copy.

According to the newspaper, the sender addressed the letter to the Met’s Fixated Threat Assessment Centre, or FTAC, a specialist unit dealing with threats and obsessive behaviour involving members of the Royal Family and other public figures.

More significantly, The Sun says the letter alleged that Thomas Markle had sexually abused a child and had admitted travelling abroad to abuse children.

No one has proven those allegations, and Thomas Markle Sr. strongly denies the current accusations against him. But the letter’s existence provides important corroboration for something Meghan revealed only hours earlier: she says she received disturbing information about her father in 2018, and authorities told her they were investigating it.

The Letter Meghan Spoke About Does Exist

Meghan said a letter was sent to the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection in 2018. The Sun now reports that the copy it has seen was specifically addressed to the Met’s Fixated Threat Assessment Centre.

“They subsequently shared that letter with me,” she said.

She described its contents as “troubling and disturbing” and said she had received assurances that authorities were investigating the allegations.

Initially, the Met would only say that it was carrying out internal enquiries to determine whether officers from Royalty and Specialist Protection had passed such a letter to Meghan.

That left open the obvious question: did the letter exist? According to The Sun, yes. The newspaper says it has now seen a copy and reports that the sender had addressed the document to FTAC. It further reports that the letter has now reached the police as they examine what happened to it in 2018.

That does not mean the Metropolitan Police has independently authenticated every claim in The Sun’s report. But it makes it much harder to dismiss Meghan’s account as something invented years later.

The Allegations Were Even More Serious Than Meghan Revealed

Meghan deliberately did not disclose the contents of the letter in her statement. She simply described the allegations as disturbing. The Sun has gone further. It says the letter alleged that Thomas Markle had sexually abused a child and claimed he had admitted travelling to the Philippines and Thailand to abuse children.

It is clearly addressed to the Met’s Fixated Threat Assessment Centre (FTAC), which deals with risks posed by obsessives to the Royal Family and VIPs.

The letter – which it’s understood has now been shared with police – alleges that Mr Markle had sexually abused a child.

The Sun

Interestingly, Thomas Markle Jr. made allegations about his father’s trips to Thailand years before the current investigation. In an October 2018 video interview, he claimed Thomas Sr. had described paying women for sex during visits to Thailand in the 1980s. He also recalled his father sending packages to people in Thailand and the Philippines. Thomas Sr. disputed his son’s allegations at the time. Although the interview raises questions about Thomas Jr.’s earlier accounts, it contains no allegation of child sexual abuse and provides no evidence supporting the current accusations.

The Daily Mail Has Spent Years Amplifying Thomas Markle

The Daily Mail has hardly been a neutral observer in Meghan’s estrangement from her father. Its own search results show around 200 articles about Thomas Markle, spread across 20 pages with 10 results per page. Many have presented his side sympathetically, particularly around his health problems, repeated pleas for reconciliation and desire to meet Archie and Lilibet.

Investigative journalist Carole Cadwalladr recently joked that Thomas was effectively the paper’s “special correspondent” while sharing screenshots of its extensive coverage of him.

But the relationship went beyond frequent interviews. We have previously documented Thomas’s unusually close relationship with Mail on Sunday journalist Caroline Graham. Graham has said they became friends, spoke regularly and had an understanding that their conversations remained off the record unless Thomas agreed otherwise. During his 2025 health crisis, Thomas contacted Graham before some members of his own family, and she travelled to see him in hospital.

Graham also played a central role in one of the most consequential episodes in Meghan and Thomas’s estrangement. She co-wrote the Mail on Sunday story that published excerpts from Meghan’s private letter to her father, prompting Meghan’s successful privacy and copyright case against Associated Newspapers.

That history matters now. For years, the paper amplified Thomas’s version of events while Meghan largely stayed silent about why she kept her distance.

Now that Meghan has revealed she received disturbing allegations about him in 2018, and The Sun says it has seen the letter containing them, some of that earlier coverage deserves another look.

Why Didn’t the Met Investigate?

This is where things get complicated. The Daily Mail reported that the Metropolitan Police did not previously investigate Thomas Markle and is not currently investigating him.

At first glance, that might sound contradictory. It is not necessarily. According to The Sun, the allegations described conduct said to have happened abroad. Thomas Markle was also living outside Britain.

That raises obvious jurisdiction questions. Because the alleged conduct occurred overseas, the Met may have lacked jurisdiction to investigate it directly. That raises another question: did officers refer the information to authorities abroad? The Sun says the force declined to answer that.

That is now one of the biggest unanswered questions. The unanswered questions are now fairly straightforward: which officers received and assessed the letter, what action they took afterwards, and whether they referred the allegations to another authority.

And why was Meghan left believing authorities were investigating? The Met says it is now trying to establish what its officers did in 2018.

The Current Investigation Is Separate — For Now

The new scrutiny comes as Philippine authorities investigate allegations that Thomas Markle possessed child sexual abuse images at his former home in Cebu.

The allegations were made by his son, Thomas Markle Jr., who says he discovered disturbing material on electronic devices.

Philippine Justice Undersecretary Nicholas Ty has confirmed that the country’s anti-trafficking and online child exploitation task force is investigating. The FBI has also said it is aware of the allegations and will assist Philippine authorities while examining whether any US federal laws may have been broken.

Eight Years of Being Asked Why She Cut Him Off

Perhaps this is the part that should make some sections of the British media uncomfortable. For years, Meghan was repeatedly criticised for refusing to reconcile with her father.

Thomas Markle gave interview after interview discussing their estrangement, his health and his desire to meet Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Commentators questioned what kind of daughter would keep her children away from their grandfather. Meghan largely said nothing. Now she says there was a reason.

“I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications’ distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children, was for one reason: to protect them.”

And now The Sun — the newspaper that broke the current allegations — says it has seen the 2018 letter Meghan was talking about.

Meghan says she knew information about her father that the public did not know. The question is no longer simply why Meghan cut off her father. It is also why so many people were so confident they already knew the answer.
