For nearly a decade, sections of the British press portrayed Meghan Sussex as a cruel and ungrateful daughter for refusing to reconcile with Thomas Markle Sr. They called her selfish. They accused her of abandoning an elderly parent. They demanded she allow him access to her children.
Now that serious allegations have emerged against Thomas Markle, some of those same commentators have found a new reason to criticise her. Some want to know why she didn’t speak out sooner. Her recollection of when she received a letter containing disturbing allegations is now being questioned. And her imperfect memory of events from almost eight years ago is being treated as though it undermines the entire account.
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police have confirmed receiving a letter containing allegations against Thomas Markle and failing to share those allegations with other law enforcement agencies.
Why is Meghan being interrogated about her response when the real questions concern the allegations against her father and how the authorities handled them?
The Sun’s Exclusive: Thomas Markle Jr. Accuses His Father
On Thursday, 22 October 2026, The Sun broke the story after speaking with Thomas Markle Jr. He alleged that he discovered child sexual abuse material among his father’s belongings in the Philippines and claimed to have reported the discovery to law enforcement. Philippine authorities subsequently confirmed an investigation. Thomas Markle Sr. denies the allegations, describing them as lies.
The person accused is Thomas Markle Sr. The person who made the accusations is Thomas Markle Jr. Meghan did not discover the material, does not control the investigation and is not responsible for her father’s alleged conduct. The allegations remain unproven.
Yet somehow, her actions have become a subject of public interrogation.
Meghan Reveals the Historical Letter
On Friday, 23 October 2026, Meghan responded to the allegations. She revealed that a letter containing disturbing allegations about her father had been passed to her through royal protection channels years earlier. She said she had been assured the allegations were being investigated.
The Metropolitan Police initially said it was conducting internal enquiries to determine how the letter had been handled. Sussex representatives confirmed that Harry and Meghan retained a copy and were willing to provide it to police. The Sun subsequently reported obtaining a copy, while ITV News independently reported examining the handwritten document.
The police initially could not confirm what had happened to the letter. That is not the same as categorically denying its existence. Yet some commentary treated uncertainty about police records as grounds to question Meghan’s credibility. The existence of the letter was subsequently corroborated.
The question we all should be asking is why the focus was on whether Meghan could prove what she had been told rather than whether the police had appropriately handled the allegations.

The Met Passed the Letter to the Sussex Office. But Who Actually Received It?
“Following a thorough review of Met Police systems and records, we have confirmed that in January 2019, we received a letter containing a number of claims about alleged offending outside the United Kingdom.
“It was sent to the MPS Protection Command to raise concerns in relation to the security of the Duchess of Sussex.

“The details of the allegations in the letter were not shared with other law enforcement agencies.”
— Metropolitan Police spokesperson, 24 October 2026
On Saturday, 24 October 2026, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that it received a letter containing allegations against Thomas Markle in January 2019. Protection Command reviewed it and passed it to the Sussex office. The force did not share the allegations with other law enforcement agencies. It is now reviewing its handling of the matter.
However, in January 2019, Harry and Meghan did not have a separate royal household. They operated within Kensington Palace, sharing communications arrangements with Prince William and Kate Middleton. Their separate household was not announced until 15 March, 2019. Harry and Meghan did, however, already have private office staff.
Jason Knauf was serving as communications secretary for Harry and Meghan during the shared Kensington Palace arrangements in January 2019. He had also been directly involved in managing communications concerning Thomas Markle, having spoken with Meghan’s father on numerous occasions and reviewed a draft of her private August 2018 letter to him, as established during her privacy lawsuit against Associated Newspapers. Buckingham Palace announced Knauf’s appointment as Senior Adviser to William and Kate on 15 March 2019. However, there is no public evidence that Knauf received, reviewed or handled the separate police warning letter containing allegations against Thomas Markle.
So who actually received the document within the royal household? Was it a private secretary, a protection officer or a communications official? Who assured Meghan that the allegations were being investigated? And why did the police not refer them to other law enforcement agencies?
On Saturday, a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex acknowledged that she may have misremembered the date, having initially recalled receiving the letter in 2018. The spokesperson said police records should be treated as the accurate reference point.
“In recalling events from more than seven years ago, without the benefit of a diary entry or contemporaneous record, it is understandable that she may have been mistaken by a few months. If the MPS holds a time-stamped record confirming that the letter was reviewed in 2019, that should be treated as the accurate reference point for when it was received and shared with the Duchess.
“I think it is reasonable to recognise that she is doing her best to recall the precise timing of events that were not diarised at the time, and that any discrepancy of a few months is an understandable consequence of that passage of time.”
Spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, speaking to GB News on 24 October 2026
The Met has clarified when it received the letter. What remains unanswered is who handled the warning, what action followed and why the allegations were not referred to other authorities. A woman misremembering a date is not the same as an institution failing to refer serious allegations to the appropriate authorities.
Why Didn’t Meghan Speak Out? The Impossible Standard
ITV reported that a source close to the Sussexes explained Meghan had been advised against publicising unproven allegations because of potential legal consequences and the risk of jeopardising an investigation. She had been assured the matter was being handled.
What exactly was Meghan supposed to do?
She had not discovered the alleged evidence. She was not an investigator. Meghan was told the allegations had already reached the police. Was she expected to publicly accuse her father without proof? And if she had, would the same commentators now criticising her silence have supported her? Or would they have accused her of vindictively spreading allegations against her elderly father?
Meghan was condemned for refusing contact with her father. Now she is being criticised for not publicly revealing allegations that might have explained that refusal. Under these standards, there was no response she could have given that would have satisfied her critics.
Piers Morgan illustrated the derangement perfectly.
Inexplicable. And did Meghan Markle make any further enquiries to the police about her father’s alleged crimes and any investigation into them? If not, why not? Why did none of them do anything if the claims were so serious? Why didn’t they seek to protect others?
— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) October 24, 2026
This is the same Piers Morgan who spent years demanding that Meghan reconcile with her father and publicly dismissed her account of suicidal thoughts. Now he’s questioning why she didn’t make further enquiries about allegations already reported to police.
Yet in April 2026, Morgan defended Princess Beatrice and Eugenie on Piers Morgan Uncensored, asking: “You’re not really going to attack two young women in their early 20s for decisions taken by their parents, are you?”
So why does Morgan extend compassion to Andrew’s daughters while interrogating Meghan over her father’s alleged conduct?
He may object to accusations of racism, but his contrasting treatment of these women raises serious questions about racial double standards. Piers Morgan has some explaining to do.
Shame Must Change Sides: Meghan Is Not Responsible for Her Father’s Alleged Actions
When allegations of sexual abuse emerge, public scrutiny should concentrate on the alleged wrongdoing, the available evidence and the institutions responsible for investigating it. It should not be redirected towards a woman who learned about allegations against a family member.
Meghan is not responsible for her father’s alleged actions. Nor should Meghan be expected to answer for the Metropolitan Police’s decision not to share serious allegations with other law enforcement agencies, a decision the force is now reviewing
Women should not be shamed for the actions of men. Shame must change sides. And in this case, accountability must be directed towards the alleged wrongdoing and the institutions responsible for examining it, not towards Meghan for protecting her family.

The Questions Journalists Should Actually Be Asking
Rather than scrutinising Meghan’s memory of a date, journalists should investigate the questions the Metropolitan Police’s admission has raised.
Were appropriate safeguarding and information-sharing procedures followed, particularly given the seriousness of the allegations involving children?
Why does the Metropolitan Police refer to the “office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex” in January 2019, when Harry and Meghan had not yet established a separate royal household?
Was the letter delivered to Harry’s private office, his royal protection team or someone within the shared Kensington Palace operation? Who received it, and who else was informed of its contents?
Who within the Metropolitan Police decided not to refer the allegations to law enforcement agencies with jurisdiction over the alleged offences, and what was the justification?
Who assured Meghan that the allegations were being investigated, and what investigation were those assurances based on?
These questions concern institutional responsibility, accountability and the protection of children. They deserve far more attention than turning Meghan’s recollection into another royal scandal.

It’s absolutely unbelievable, and I find it criminal and defamatory that people are questioning Meghan instead of asking the obvious questions.
As long as the press is making money from this malice and this filth, they won’t let their prey go. They’re hounding her to death, just as they did to Harry’s mother.
I deeply regret that Meghan finds herself in this – from a human perspective – appalling country. It may well have lovely forests and lovely rain, and perhaps there are also some of Harry’s friends there and a small number of people who haven’t been poisoned by this press, but Meghan is still not in safe hands there – and in many other respects, she is worse off there.
No one is standing by her side. Neither the politicians nor that appalling palacefamily. The Presse and this palacefamily will torment her for the rest of her life, and without her lovely home in Montecito, she doesn’t even have a proper home in this country. They’ve taken that away from her too.
Oh God, Harry, what on earth are you doing?
