The thorny issue of an unknown tabloid reporter, seeking attention/15 minutes of fame in an effort to get through to a senile demented moron, failed spectacularly.
Elizabeth Solaru’s podcast on YouTube
4 Sept 2026, provides salient comments on this topic, transcript follows:
“A sitting president with an active war & multiple trade disputes gave his opinion on Harry and Meghan”
“Trump is currently navigating conflict with Iran and simultaneous trade tensions with multiple countries, matters with genuine, immediate consequences for global stability and the American economy. In the middle of a press conference nominally about travel executives, a reporter used part of that limited time to ask his opinion on two private citizens relocating within another country. That a journalist decided this was worth a presidential press conference question at all says something about how far the Sussex story has traveled beyond any reasonable proportion to its actual stakes”.
“What’s more telling is how readily Trump engaged with it rather than deflecting to something resembling his actual job”. “He didn’t say it wasn’t his place to comment on a private family’s living arrangements in a foreign country”. “He gave a detailed, opinionated answer, volunteering that he wasn’t a fan, that he thought Harry and Meghan treated the royal family with great disrespect, and that he personally wouldn’t have taken them back if he were in Charles’s position”. “That’s a head of state offering an unsolicited verdict on the internal, personal family dynamics of another country’s constitutional monarchy, a matter with precisely zero bearing on American foreign policy, trade, or national security”.
“Worth noting the specific framing of his praise too, because it reveals where his actual affections lie”. “He describes a warm, personal relationship with the late Queen and with Charles specifically, tracing it back to watching the 1953 coronation on television with his Scottish born mother”. “That’s a genuine, longstanding personal fondness for the institution itself, which explains why he was so willing to weigh in on behalf of what he sees as its wronged party, despite having no actual standing or reason to insert himself into a family dispute between British citizens”.
“Here’s the honest, useful reframe of your original observation”. “This isn’t really a story about Trump’s opinion mattering on its own terms, because it plainly doesn’t, he has no actual stake in where two private citizens choose to live”.
“It’s a story about how enormous the Sussex narrative has become as a piece of ambient global culture, large enough that even a president in the middle of genuinely consequential international crises gets asked to perform an opinion on it, and apparently finds it more appealing to answer than to redirect back to matters actually within his job description”.
“That imbalance says less about Harry and Meghan themselves and more about just how much oxygen this particular story has been allowed to consume across the entire information ecosystem, right up to press conferences about completely unrelated subjects”.
