The WNBA has launched an investigation after reports surfaced that fans directed racial slurs and hateful comments at Angel Reese during Saturday’s game between the Chicago Sky and the Indiana Fever. According to the Associated Press and USA Today, the comments were allegedly made from the stands as Reese, 23, played her WNBA debut.
In a statement, the WNBA said it “strongly condemns racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms,” and emphasized its No Space for Hate policy. The league vowed to take the incident seriously and warned it will not tolerate fan behavior that violates its code of conduct.
The WNBA Players Association (WNBPA) also issued a statement of support, confirming it is aware of the reported abuse and stands behind the league’s investigation. Pacers Sports & Entertainment, which manages the Fever’s home arena, said it is working directly with the WNBA to review footage and identify any individuals involved.

What People Are Saying
“She’s already carrying the weight of being a Black woman in this league. Now this?” – WNBA fan on X
“If the league is serious about player safety, they’ll ban these fans permanently.” – Comment on TikTok
This moment matters because Black women like Angel Reese walk into hostile crowds, stay composed under pressure, and do it all while the world watches.
The WNBA has marketed itself as a progressive, inclusive league. But statements are not enough. Policies mean nothing without enforcement. If the league truly has “No Space for Hate,” then let’s see what justice looks like in practice — not just in press releases.
This isn’t about rivalry or trash talk. It’s about racism. And if you’re still trying to downplay that, you’re part of the problem.
