The WNBA announced it could not substantiate claims of racist remarks directed at Angel Reese during the Chicago Sky versus Indiana Fever game on May 17. The league’s investigation involved interviews with fans and staff, alongside reviews of video and audio footage. It found no supporting evidence. Both Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark emphasized that racism has no place in the league.
No Evidence Found During the Investigation
The WNBA said its review included feedback from fans, team staff, and arena security. Video and audio recordings were also checked. The final report confirmed there was no proof of the alleged abuse during the game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Chicago Sky President Adam Fox said the team was grateful for the league’s swift response. He stressed the need to keep addressing hate speech at every event. Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark shared similar thoughts. They expressed appreciation for the support they received during the inquiry.
Pacers Sports & Entertainment CEO Mel Raines also thanked the league for treating the allegations with respect. She said they were pleased the WNBA had done a full investigation. The league said it would keep enforcing its fan code of conduct and using AI to watch for hateful language at future games.

Political Fallout and Media Narratives
Not everyone reacted the same way. Indiana Senator Jim Banks demanded Angel Reese apologize to Fever fans for the allegations, saying the investigation cleared them.
Media outlets showed how divided coverage can be. Left-leaning outlets framed the story around Angel Reese’s experiences as a Black woman in a league that has faced its share of racial issues. They praised the WNBA’s approach to the allegations as careful and supportive. Right-leaning sources called the claims “dubious” and said the investigation had gone on too long. They accused the league of making too much of the issue without proof.
Center-leaning sources took a more neutral approach. They focused on the investigation’s outcome, quoting players’ measured statements and noting the gap between the allegations and what was proved.
Angel Reese’s Experience and the Road Ahead
Even though the allegations could not be substantiated, the incident showed the racial dynamics that still affect Black athletes. Angel Reese has faced criticism for her confidence and style of play, while also being praised for her drive and openness.
The WNBA said it remains committed to creating safe, welcoming spaces for players and fans. The league also said it will not tolerate hate speech at any level of the game. Angel Reese, for her part, stood by her call for accountability and fairness. She did not back down from raising concerns and neither did the players’ union.
The conversation around race and sports will not go away soon. And while the investigation found no direct evidence, Angel Reese’s message still resonates: athletes deserve respect, and no one should face abuse—on or off the court.
