Thomas Markle Sr. has been released under conditions after appearing in federal court in Florida on a charge of possessing child sexual abuse material.
The 82-year-old appeared before a judge in Tampa on 6 November, following his arrest by federal agents. The court ordered his release on his own recognisance, with home detention and electronic monitoring. He did not enter a plea at the hearing, according to court reporting.
Markle faces one federal count in a case filed in California. He previously denied allegations concerning child sexual abuse material. The charge remains an allegation and has not been proven in court.
Meanwhile, a new report concerning his son, Thomas Markle Jr, has raised questions about an earlier statement by Philippine officials. The wider case has also prompted scrutiny of the Daily Mail’s longstanding coverage of Markle Sr and its reporter Caroline Graham’s relationship with him.
What happened in court?
The US Department of Justice says federal agents searched two Los Angeles-area storage units registered to Markle Sr. A criminal complaint alleges that the units contained suspected child sexual abuse material, including images in which a witness identified Markle with a child.
Investigators say they seized slides, film negatives, books and other items. The FBI affidavit says its review of the evidence was ongoing when the complaint was filed.
The court’s decision to release Markle does not end the case. He must remain under home detention and electronic monitoring while proceedings continue.
The allegations are deeply serious. The focus must remain on a thorough investigation and on protecting the children affected by the creation and circulation of abusive material.
Reported apology to Thomas Markle Jr
Earlier, a Philippine official named Thomas Markle Jr. was a “person of interest” in an investigation involving alleged material connected to his father. Officials said at the time that he was not being treated as a suspect.
On 7 November, The Sun reported that Philippine police had apologised to Thomas Markle Jr after questions arose about his earlier designation as a person of interest. The report cited a source close to the case. I could not independently confirm the reported apology through a police statement.

Questions for the Daily Mail
What did the Daily Mail know? The case has renewed questions about the Daily Mail’s years of access to Thomas Markle Sr.—and the role of journalist Caroline Graham, who developed a close relationship with him.
We have previously examined how Graham’s access shaped the newspaper’s reporting. In one earlier article, we looked at her longstanding connection with Markle and how frequently she became a source of exclusive accounts about his life.
We also questioned the newspaper’s reporting history after the Mail said its journalists had found suspected child sexual abuse material in a Mexican storage unit linked to Markle and alerted the FBI. Mexican investigators later searched the unit. The current US federal complaint concerns two separate storage units in California.
Now, Private Eye has revisited Graham’s published accounts of spending time with Markle, including her account of being present while he packed possessions for a move.
Those accounts deserve further investigation. What information did the newspaper receive over the years? How did its journalists assess it? And what steps did they take when concerns were raised?

Graham’s close relationship with Markle deserves examination. She reported being with him as he packed in Mexico, learned of his impending leg amputation before his children, and later travelled to his hospital bedside. The Daily Mail also reported that Markle had a romance with a Filipina nurse, but a colleague of the nurse told Sky News there was no relationship.
What did Graham see while Markle packed? Did she ever examine any of his belongings? What concerns, if any, reached her or her editors, and how did they respond? How did she verify the claim that he had a girlfriend while he was in rehab? Why did the public need to know whether he was in a relationship with an adult woman? The newspaper should answer those questions openly.
At present, Graham’s proximity to Markle does not establish that she knew about the alleged illegal material or concealed evidence. The Mail’s parent company has previously denied claims that it manipulated him. However, those facts do not remove the need to examine the newspaper’s reporting and what its journalists knew.
We believe sustained access brings a responsibility to explain the reporting that resulted from it. The public deserves answers grounded in evidence, while investigators pursue the allegations and keep the protection of children at the centre of their work.
Below are some of Caroline Graham’s stories and Daily Mail front-page headlines about Markle. For years, Graham gave him a platform to tell his story. Now, as serious allegations emerge, we are watching to see whether she and the newspaper will address the questions surrounding their coverage.
