Since 2018, Thomas Markle Sr’s complaints about Meghan Sussex have been treated as reliable headline material. Broadcasters invited him on air, newspapers published his accusations, and commentators condemned his daughter for keeping her distance.
Markle faces a federal charge involving child sexual abuse material. He has denied the allegations and has not been convicted. Meghan says police previously assured her that allegations against her father were being investigated.
Now The Sun says Roslyn Loveless, Markle’s ex- wife, raised concerns with the newspaper in 2018. The paper says it lacked sufficient evidence to publish or investigate further.
At the time, Dan Wootton worked at The Sun. He became its executive editor in March 2018. He later gave Markle a platform on GB News to criticise Meghan. Today, Wootton is demanding answers from her.
The Sun’s admission raises questions
The Sun reports that Loveless spoke to it about her concerns in 2018. Its explanation for not publishing or investigating further deserves examination.
In 2018 she spoke to The Sun about her concerns but nothing could be published or investigated further due to a lack of solid evidence.

Who received her information? What steps did the paper take to assess it? Did anyone contact the authorities? These are questions for a newspaper that went on to cover Markle’s public complaints about Meghan. They are also questions for its senior staff at the time.

We find it difficult to understand how concerns brought to a newspaper could have remained unknown to a senior journalist who later devoted so much attention to Markle. We do not have evidence establishing that Wootton personally knew about Loveless’s approach. Wootton and The Sun should come forward and address these questions directly.
Wootton’s record of platforming Markle
The Sun repeatedly turned Thomas Markle’s complaints about Meghan into headlines. After leaving the newspaper in 2021, Dan Wootton gave Markle a platform on GB News to criticise Meghan and Harry.
During a GB News interview, Markle accused Meghan of driving Harry away from his family and dismissed her account of suicidal thoughts. That is the coverage Meghan faced: a father given a public platform to challenge her account of her own mental health.
In a later segment titled “Duchess of Destruction”, Wootton and guest Carole Malone criticised Meghan over the estrangement. Malone, who has also been accused of spreading a false claim that Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, went to prison, suggested Meghan would be haunted if she failed to reconcile with her father.

The message to Meghan was clear: explain your distance, defend your character and make peace with your father. Few considered that she might have reasons for the boundaries she set. Yet some of the same commentators who demanded reconciliation with her father called for the Sussexes to be stripped of their titles and remain distanced from the royal family.

Why is Meghan the target again?
Now, Wootton is virtue signalling, asking why Meghan did not tell the police, palace staff or media about the allegations. But police had already received them, and Meghan says she believed they were being investigated.

Philippine police have since apologised to Thomas Markle Jr after he was wrongly named a person of interest in the investigation, according to People. The Met has acknowledged that it did not pass the allegations to other law enforcement agencies. The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating the force’s handling of the matter.
It is staggering to demand that Meghan explain why she did not do the police’s job while overlooking the questions facing the institutions involved. The Sun must explain its response to Loveless. Wootton must explain what, if anything, he knew while working there.
Meghan was vilified for distancing herself from her father. Now, as Thomas Markle faces serious allegations, some of the same white men in the commentariat who gave him a sympathetic platform are attacking her for trusting police to investigate. They should examine their own coverage. Their determination to put a Black woman on trial for a man’s alleged actions has a name: misogynoir.
