Malia and Sasha Obama made a rare public appearance in Chicago on Thursday, and the internet collectively lost its mind. The former first daughters stepped out to support their parents at the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center, looking absolutely stunning.
The sisters have largely stayed out of the spotlight since leaving the White House nearly a decade ago. They were just 10 and 7 when their father Barack Obama won the presidency in 2008. Now they are 27 and 25, confident young women living their own lives. Watching them grow up has been a privilege.

The presidential daughters, nearly a decade removed from the White House, appeared on stage alongside their parents at the star-studded grand opening of the sprawling South Side Chicago complex, which includes a museum, multiple concert and event venues, public park space, and a new branch of the Chicago Public Library.
The Obama daughters have largely avoided the public eye since their family left the White House, popping up on their parents’ Instagrams for birthdays and holidays.
Malia, 27, has pursued a career in the film industry and has made sporadic appearances on red carpets as she’s collaborated on projects with Donald Glover, including the Amazon Prime show Swarm and her short film directorial debut, The Heart.

Malia opted for a tonal look featuring a light gray blazer with wide arms and a cinched waist. The deep V neckline dropped low with nothing underneath. She paired the blazer with a darker hued miniskirt. Her cascading boho braids transitioned from dark to a lighter copper tone. Malia previously wore a Vivienne Westwood dress and Coperni boots at the Deauville American Film Festival in 2024.
Sasha chose a white knit set from Miu Miu. The long top fell off one shoulder with an asymmetric hemline. She paired it with a matching skirt. A thick brown belt with reptilian detailing and a large rounded buckle cinched her waist. She accessorised with chunky metallic earrings. Her dark braids were styled half up and half down. She completed the look with Miu Miu slingback sandals featuring silver studs.
Michelle Obama stunned in a Thom Browne pinstripe skirt suit with a white corset top and sculptural brogue pumps.

Final Thoughts
Malia and Sasha Obama are absolutely gorgeous. The family resemblance is uncanny, with Malia being Barack’s mini-me while Sasha is Michelle’s double. These young women have more class and poise, and they endured unimaginable scrutiny during their father’s time in office and came out the other side as grounded, gracious adults. That is a testament to their parents and to their own strength.
We watched them grow up in front of the entire world. They were just little girls with gap tooth smiles when they entered the White House. Now they are full-grown women building their own careers and living their own lives.
The Obama family is the healthiest family to come out of the White House in modern history. The girls turned out well. The parents stayed married. The children seem genuinely happy. That is no small achievement.

Much as I ache for the days of the Obama administration (despite Mitch McConnell’s treasonous machinations,) I’m thrilled every time I see any Obamas thriving.
My newly-minted graduates were children during the administration and heavily indulged in wishful thinking, wanting Michelle Obama for president during Cheetolini’s first term.
Barack, Michelle and their children are excellent role models and I aspire to be as thoughtful, wise and open minded as them.
