The royal family has a habit of claiming neutrality. The monarchy, we are told, is above politics. It does not take sides. It represents everyone. And yet, somehow, the institution keeps finding ways to send very specific and controversial messages.
The latest example? Queen Camilla posed for a photo with J.K. Rowling at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, as part of the Queen’s childhood reading initiatives. The post was published on June 30, the final day of Pride Month.
The Palace framed it as a harmless celebration of literacy. But at this point, Rowling is not simply “the Harry Potter author.” She has made her views on trans people one of the defining parts of her public identity. So when the Palace platforms her, smiles beside her, and posts the image as if this is a simple literary meet‑and‑greet, people are allowed to ask what message is being sent.
Here is what People reported:
Queen Camilla courted controversy this week as she welcomed Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling to visit with her in Scotland.
On Tuesday, June 30, the Queen, 78, shared a photo with Rowling, 60, as they met at Holyroodhouse in support of Camilla’s childhood reading initiatives.
“With a shared passion for books and a deep commitment to children reading for pleasure, The Queen and author J.K. Rowling have met at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh,” the post read. “Her Majesty and Ms Rowling discussed the importance of ensuring that young people have access to books and the vital part reading plays in opening doors for future generations.”
Some followers found the post distasteful, however, as it fell on the final day of Pride Month and Rowling has a history of making anti-trans comments.
Rowling’s public statements against transgender women have led many to label her a transgender-exclusionary radical feminist, or TERF. The author – who first came under fire in 2020 for making remarks widely condemned as transphobic – has denied being transphobic, defending her views as pro-feminist.

Camilla appearing with J.K. Rowling was not just a random literary photo op. It was a choice, and a revealing one. If Camilla wanted to meet Rowling privately, she could have done that. Instead, the royals turned it into official content. That significant, especially from an institution that constantly claims it must stay neutral and apolitical.
The same people who call Meghan Sussex “political” for speaking against misogyny and bigotry will somehow find nothing political about Camilla posing with one of Britain’s most divisive public figures.
Reading is good, and literacy is important. But Britain has countless children’s authors the royals could have chosen. They chose Rowling, and they should have known exactly what conversation that would start. The monarchy keeps telling us who it is. The only question is why anyone still pretends to be shocked.
