The Sussex family is currently on holiday in Europe. The plan was simple: enjoy a family break, then travel to the UK in July for a series of events marking the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games. But nothing is ever simple with this family.

Two publications, two different versions of events. People reported that the Sussexes’ plans remain unchanged. The Telegraph reported that Harry is reconsidering after learning he and his family will not receive taxpayer-funded police protection. The truth is probably somewhere in between, but the result is the same: a family that wants to visit Britain is being made to feel unwelcome.

Here is what People reported:

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are currently vacationing in Europe with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, PEOPLE understands, ahead of the family’s planned trip to the U.K. next month.

The family getaway comes after the Duke, 41, and Duchess of Sussex, 44, confirmed on Friday, June 26, that they intend to travel to Britain with their children in July for a series of engagements surrounding the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham.

While Harry and Meghan have planned public appearances, Archie and Lilibet are not expected to attend any public engagements.

On Saturday, The Telegraph reported that Harry is reconsidering the visit after learning that his request for taxpayer-funded police protection has been denied. PEOPLE understands, however, that the details shared by the Sussexes on Friday remain unchanged.

Security continues to be a central concern for the Duke of Sussex. A source notes that the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC) has yet to carry out a long-awaited Risk Management Board review of Harry’s security arrangements.

The Duke has previously said he “can’t see a world” in which he would bring his family back to the U.K. without adequate protection.

Next month’s trip to the U.K. would mark the first time that Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, have been in the country since they visited to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of the late Queen Elizabeth in 2022.

Here is what The Telegraph reported:

Shortly afterwards, The Telegraph understands, the Duke was informed that his application for a security package for the visit had been denied.

The family will not receive taxpayer-funded protection while in the UK, other than when they are within royal residences. The Duke received an invitation from the King for his family to spend part of the trip in a royal property.

A source close to the Duke and Duchess has accused the Home Office and the committee responsible for assessing their security of “wilfully creating conditions that are making it nearly impossible” for them to move around Britain.

While the Duke himself was “generally pretty robust” about handling security issues, the source said, there was concern about the effect on the children should anything go awry.

The Duke is described as “desperate” for Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, to see their grandfather, the King. He last saw them in 2022, when the Sussexes were in Britain for Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.

A source close to the Sussexes told The Telegraph: “The precarious security situation and endless speculation about where the family will stay is making the planning and logistics for the private security team increasingly difficult.”

This Was Always About Royal Control

The latest RAVEC decision proves what many of us have been saying for years. Prince Harry RAVEC never offered Prince Harry proper protection. They offered him optics. The committee has reportedly denied the security package for this visit, while a source close to the Sussexes says officials still have not carried out the long-awaited Risk Management Board review. His security status was downgraded years ago and has not been properly updated since. That is the crux of the matter. Harry is not asking for luxury treatment. He is asking for a serious, current assessment of the threats against him, his wife, and their children. And that is where Charles’ so-called olive branch starts to look like an insult.

Offering Harry a royal residence without proper security is not protection. It is PR which allows Charles to look like the generous father while avoiding the actual responsibility of keeping his son and grandchildren safe. A palace room means very little if the people inside it are not properly protected. The contrast is hard to ignore: Charles has reportedly funded private support for his disgraced brother and Epstein associate, Prince Andrew, yet Harry is still fighting for basic security arrangements for his own family.

The “30 days’ notice” excuse is a smokescreen. Harry has already explained the problem: giving notice does not guarantee full protection. It can amount to Harry being handed a contact number in case something goes wrong. Meanwhile, the press seems to know every detail of Harry’s movements in advance. Details of where he might stay, what route he might take, and who he might see are repeatedly published. The media can create risk, and the palace has offered no clear public solution.

Final Thoughts

Other countries have managed to protect Harry and Meghan Sussex, during major events. Germany, the Netherlands, Canada and Australia have all hosted them without turning basic security into a national drama. Meghan’s Paris appearance and Harry’s Ukraine visits both showed that high-profile movements can be handled quietly when the planning is disciplined. Yet in the UK, the son of the King cannot secure a straightforward safety arrangement for himself, his wife and his children. That should embarrass the institution, and it should destroy Charles’s legacy, as he continues to allow petty grievances and weakness to dictate the response.

If Charles really wanted Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet in the UK, the security question would not still be hanging over them like this. The palace wants the appearance of reconciliation without doing the work of reconciliation. Charles and Queen Camilla’s acolytes want the public to believe Charles is a loving grandfather, while his actions suggest something much colder, painfully reminiscent of the treatment he doled out to his first wife, Princess Diana.

Harry should not have to beg for his father to be safe in his own country. It is hard to believe Charles, a whole king has no influence at all when the issue involves his own son and grandchildren. The fact that this is still being fought through leaks, headlines and bureaucratic games says everything.
