Prince Harry has accused The Sun of publishing a damaging front-page story that falsely tied him to a U.S. sex-trafficking lawsuit involving Sean “Diddy” Combs, out of what he claims was revenge. Court documents recently unsealed show Harry believed the article, published in March 2024, was part of a pattern of retaliation by Rupert Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers after he sued them for unlawful information gathering.

The headline read: “Harry named in P. Diddy sex traffic case.” The story led with claims that legal filings “linked” the Duke of Sussex to Diddy through name-dropping at wild parties. The article buried the facts until paragraph four, failing to state upfront that Prince Harry faced no accusations, never attended Diddy’s events, and only met him once, alongside Prince William, at a 2007 concert honoring Princess Diana.

Front page of The Sun dated March 27, 2024, showing a large headline reading “Harry named in P. Diddy sex traffic case” with a photo of Prince Harry posing with Kanye West and Sean “Diddy” Combs from a 2007 event. The headline implies involvement despite noting in fine print that Harry was not accused of any wrongdoing.
The Sun launched a textbook smear campaign with its front page. It placed Prince Harry’s name beside serious criminal allegations without legal basis, even though the article admitted he was never accused.

Media Cropped The Truth, And Harry Paid The Price

The story outraged the public not only because it misled readers, but also because it cropped Prince William out of a widely circulated photo. The media edited the image to push a false narrative about Prince Harry. They portrayed him as uniquely entangled in the Diddy allegations, even though both royal brothers attended the same public event.

The photo, taken in 2007 at a Diana tribute concert, was cropped to exclude Prince William—who was also present—revealing the media’s selective targeting and deliberate attempt to smear Harry while shielding the future king.

In court filings, Prince Harry said stories like this one had a “hugely negative impact” on his mental health, and harmed his wife, Meghan and their children. He alleged the article was one of “a large number of false and highly derogatory” stories published after he sued The Sun for phone hacking and surveillance. NGN settled the lawsuit earlier this year, reportedly paying over £10 million in damages and legal fees, and issuing a formal apology to Prince Harry for years of unlawful intrusion. Harry stated in his filings that the media linked him to Diddy’s sex trafficking case as part of a broader campaign to punish him for speaking out.

Cropped Images And Silence From The Palace Reveal Deeper Bias

Despite the explosive headlines, the actual lawsuit against Diddy never accused Harry of any crime. The mention of his name came from a producer who claimed Diddy used references to high-profile individuals, like Prince Harry and other celebrities, to add legitimacy to his social circle. This legal tactic is not unusual, but the British press seized the moment to run sensationalist coverage implying scandal where none existed.

Prince Harry’s legal team said these kinds of stories helped force his hand in leaving royal life. The strain of press hostility, unchecked by the palace, eroded his trust in the institution. While the British press chose to spotlight the names of Prince Harry and Diddy in dramatic headlines, they ignored Prince William’s identical appearance in the same photos. They chose not to mention that both princes declined invitations to Diddy’s parties. They chose to erase nuance in favor of humiliation and punishment.
