Brittany Boltinhouse, crowned Miss North Carolina USA 2026 in June, has lost her title just over a month later. The Miss USA Organization said the decision followed a “thorough review” of conduct over an extended period that violated its standards.

The organisation did not specify the exact conduct, but its chairman said it “does not tolerate racism, homophobia, transphobia nor language that strips any person of their dignity.” First runner-up Myla Hadley will now take over the title.

A Pageant Crown Has More Accountability Than Politics

The Miss North Carolina USA organization wasted no time stripping Brittany Boltinhouse of her crown after discovering her racist social media history. That is how accountability should work. A winner who posts bigoted content should not be allowed to stand as a representative, especially in a state as diverse as North Carolina.

People are also pointing out that Boltinhouse was the first Latina to hold the title, which makes this even more disappointing. She had an opportunity to represent a community and instead used her platform to spread hate. The runner-up, who is also a woman of colour, will now take her place. If you are going to be a MAGA supporter, you have to accept that your views will eventually catch up with you. This is the “find out” stage.

The response from the organisation was also refreshing. They did not try to cover it up, offer a lukewarm statement or wait for the controversy to blow over. They acted decisively and made it clear that hate has no place in their competition.

This is what consequences look like. More institutions need to follow this example instead of giving people passes because they are famous, powerful or “just sharing their opinions.” Boltinhouse will probably land a gig on a right-wing media outlet soon, but at least she cannot call herself Miss North Carolina anymore.
