The Shani doll is returning to the spotlight. Variety announced that Mattel has partnered with Amazon MGM Studios to create a live-action television series based on the 1990s doll line. Emmy-nominated writer Janine Nabers will serve as showrunner, bringing her sharp voice and experience from Swarm and Atlanta to the project.

A Groundbreaking Legacy

Shani first appeared in 1991 after years of criticism that Barbie lacked diversity. Created by designer Kitty Black Perkins, the doll line celebrated Black beauty and identity with characters who looked like the girls who played with them. The dolls gained loyal fans but were later discontinued and folded into the wider Barbie brand. Even so, they left a lasting cultural mark.

Now, Mattel hopes to revive that legacy. The series is described as a family dramedy centered on the aspirational qualities of Shani. Jennifer Breslow, head of scripted and unscripted television for Mattel Studios, will oversee the production. If greenlit, it will be Mattel’s first premium scripted television title.

Riding the Barbie Momentum

The announcement follows the success of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film, which earned nearly $1.5 billion worldwide and secured eight Oscar nominations. That success proved that stories built around iconic dolls can captivate audiences when told with creativity and care. Shani’s return, however, carries an even deeper weight: the chance to honor a legacy of representation that spoke directly to Black girlhood.

Fan Excitement Builds

The response so far has been largely positive. Outlets like Black Girl Nerds called the project “groundbreaking,” while others praised its focus on inclusivity. On social media, fans highlighted Nabers’ track record, saying her mix of wit and cultural insight makes her the perfect choice to lead.

Some are already imagining who could bring Shani to life on screen. Among those suggested is rising star Olandria, whose energy and relatability align closely with the doll’s original vision. Her casting, fans argue, would honor Shani’s roots while connecting to a new generation.

If Mattel and Amazon succeed, the Shani series could become more than another toy adaptation. It has the potential to celebrate diversity, empower young viewers, and remind audiences why Shani mattered in the first place.
