Madonna returned to the MTV Video Music Awards stage Sunday night. It was her first time in 23 years. MTV wisely treated her like the woman whose fingerprints are all over the building. She took home Artist of the Year at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, one of the ceremony’s top prizes.

What Happened on Stage

The 68-year-old opened the show with a huge Confessions II production. Guests included Sabrina Carpenter, Charli xcx, Julia Garner, Seth Rogen, Debi Mazar, and several other surprises. Yes, Sabrina and Charli are two of the biggest pop stars working right now. They were guests in Madonna’s show. As they should be.

The most remarkable thing wasn’t that Madonna can still put on a show at 68. The VMAs and Madonna basically grew up together. Her 1984 “Like a Virgin” performance became a defining VMAs moment. It helped establish the show as something people might discuss the next morning. In 2003, she kissed Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera on the same stage. For four decades, she has treated music videos as actual artistic projects. Not just promotional footage of someone singing beside a wind machine.

The Double Standard

Pop culture has a peculiar habit of treating female legends as if they expire five minutes after a younger woman becomes famous. Men become elder statesmen. Women become “still doing it at her age.” Madonna has spent half her career being told she is too old. Her clothes? Wrong. Her dancing? Wrong. Sexual music? Wrong. Younger men? Wrong. Her body? Wrong. Apparently nobody told Madonna that compliance was optional.

It was particularly satisfying to see Sabrina Carpenter and Charli xcx folded into her performance. Both women belong to a pop landscape Madonna helped create. Sabrina can be playful, campy, and openly sexual onstage. That combination doesn’t feel revolutionary. Women like Madonna already absorbed decades of outrage for doing it. Charli can build a pop era around club culture, provocation, and refusing to behave. That road was travelled before, too. This doesn’t mean Madonna invented every interesting woman who came after her. It means influence becomes deeply embedded in culture. Younger audiences can forget somebody had to break the rules first. Those rules stopped looking breakable. And Madonna is still here to collect her flowers herself.
