KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Brooke Shields claimed she interrupted Meghan Sussex during a 2024 SXSW panel, calling her childhood activism story “too precious.”
- Critics accused Shields of undercutting Meghan and projecting trauma from her own childhood roles, including Pretty Baby.
- The moment sparked renewed debate on race, jealousy, and how confident Black women like Meghan are often dismissed in public settings.
Brooke Shields is under fire after revisiting her interaction with Meghan Sussex during a women’s empowerment panel at South by Southwest in 2024. The actress claimed she “had to interrupt” Meghan’s story about childhood activism because the moment felt “too precious.” However, Meghan had already finished speaking, so Shields’ version misrepresents what actually happened.
What once felt like a passing moment resurfaced after Shields repeated the story on a podcast hosted by India Hicks, a cousin of King Charles. Shields comments struck a nerve with many who feel she tried to undercut Meghan’s message. The podcast episode has since disappeared from public platforms, but the backlash has only grown.
Video Contradicts Brooke Shields Version of Events
During the SXSW panel, Meghan Sussex shared her well-known story about writing to Procter & Gamble at age 11 to protest a sexist dish soap ad. The company later changed the tagline. Meghan’s story lasted under a minute and came in response to a prompt from Katie Couric. It ended without disruption.
Then came Shields’ comment. She chimed in with a joke about portraying a sexually exploited child in Pretty Baby at age 11, calling Meghan’s story “too precious.” The audience laughed, but the tone shifted. What seemed like an attempt at humor now reads, to many, as unnecessary and undermining.
Again, it must be pointed out that Shields didn’t interrupt Meghan at all. Meghan completed her thought, and the panel moved forward. Shields’ recent claim that she had to cut in to break the seriousness has led to accusations that she revised the moment for attention or out of discomfort with Meghan’s calm authority.

Shields Projected Her Own Trauma onto Meghan Sussex
The backlash goes deeper than a single panel remark. Many see Shields’ reaction as part of a larger pattern—women undercutting Meghan Sussex when she speaks about issues that matter. However, people have also suggested that Shields, whose own childhood included nude scenes and early sexualization, might have responded to Meghan’s story with resentment rather than solidarity.
The contrast between Meghan’s letter-writing at 11 and Shields’ exploitation at the same age didn’t go unnoticed. Viewers questioned why Shields chose to frame Meghan’s activism as too polished, especially on a panel about women’s empowerment.
Whether one considers Shields’ tone to be petty, or a projection of unresolved trauma onto a moment that celebrated agency and self-worth, we can all agree the panel deserved more respect than a punchline at someone else’s expense.
The podcast video, now removed, only added to the growing pile of questions. Shields’ version of events felt rehearsed. Her remarks reopened a moment that had otherwise passed without controversy. The fallout has sparked renewed discussion around race, jealousy, and the discomfort some women show when others, especially Black women, speak confidently and without apology.
Final Thoughts
Brooke Shields might have thought she was making a harmless joke, but reviving the SXSW panel moment has only backfired. The event was meant to celebrate empowerment, not trigger a competition between childhood experiences. By brushing off Meghan Sussex’s activism as “too precious,” Shields managed to negatively center herself instead. And really, of all the moments to spotlight, why would the King’s cousin choose this one? It’s curious how often royal-adjacent platforms find time to amplify anyone taking a swipe at Meghan. Nevertheless, viewers haven’t forgotten what actually happened, and they’re not falling for the rewrite.

Excellent article. It needs to be shared far & wide. More people need to read Feminegra. What Brooke did was very irresponsible, insensitive and outrageous. She needs to be exposed for her blatant lies.
Pathetic of Brooke!! She has just exposed her true motive behind the comment. No one at the time thought it was an attack on Meghan Sussex but now Brooke has exposed she didn’t want to hear what Meghan had to say. She wanted to interrupt and erase what Meghan had to say with levity. Racism, jealousy and self-promotion!
So true your on point
