Blue Origin will launch its first all-female crewed mission this spring, marking a major milestone in spaceflight history. The New Shepard NS-31 mission will carry six women, including journalist Lauren Sánchez, pop star Katy Perry, and veteran broadcaster Gayle King. The mission will be the first all-female crewed spaceflight since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo mission in 1963.

A Major Step for Women in Space

The upcoming flight highlights the growing role of women in space exploration. While women have participated in missions for decades, this marks the first time a private spaceflight company has assembled an all-female crew. The mission aims to inspire future generations and show that space is open to all.

Lauren Sánchez, an Emmy-winning journalist and pilot, helped bring the crew together. She has called the mission an opportunity to challenge perspectives and create a lasting impact. The flight will carry Perry, one of the best-selling musicians in history, who plans to perform her song “E.T.” in space, making her the first pop star to do so. King, an award-winning journalist, has said she is stepping out of her comfort zone to be part of history.

A Diverse and Accomplished Crew

The crew members come from different fields, but they share a common goal of exploration and inspiration. Aisha Bowe, a former NASA rocket scientist, has spent her career promoting STEM education. Amanda Nguyen, a bioastronautics researcher and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, has worked on major NASA projects. Kerianne Flynn, a producer and nonprofit leader, has supported advocacy and storytelling.

Blue Origin’s Expanding Role in Space Travel

This mission is the 11th human flight for Blue Origin’s New Shepard program. The company, founded by Jeff Bezos, has sent 52 people to space since it began crewed flights in 2021. It aims to make space more accessible and expand opportunities for private citizens.

The launch will take place later this spring, with a final date yet to be announced. The mission reflects the growing shift in space travel, where private companies and diverse crews play a central role. It also marks a new chapter for women in space, proving that the next frontier is open to all.
