Blue Origin achieved a historic milestone by launching its first all-female crew aboard the New Shepard rocket. The mission, designated NS-31, featured six accomplished women: pop star Katy Perry, journalist Gayle King, aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, film producer Kerianne Flynn, and pilot Lauren Sánchez. This flight marked the first time since 1963 that an all-women team journeyed into space, highlighting Blue Origin’s commitment to inclusivity in space exploration.

A Journey Beyond Earth
The NS-31 mission lifted off from Blue Origin’s launch site in West Texas, propelling the all-female crew beyond the Kármán line—the internationally recognized boundary of space. During the approximately 11-minute suborbital flight, the crew experienced several minutes of weightlessness, offering them a unique perspective of Earth. Katy Perry expressed her awe by singing “What a Wonderful World” while floating in zero gravity, encapsulating the emotional impact of the voyage.

Each member of the all-female crew brought a distinct background to the mission. Aisha Bowe, a former NASA engineer, emphasized the importance of representation in STEM fields. Amanda Nguyen viewed the journey as a symbol of healing and empowerment. Lauren Sánchez, who played a pivotal role in organizing the mission, highlighted the significance of storytelling in inspiring future generations.

Redefining Spacewear
Before the flight, the all-female crew wore special spacesuits designed by the fashion brand Monse. The suits were made to be both safe and stylish, using flame-resistant materials that fit women properly. Lauren Sánchez worked closely with the designers to make sure the suits were safe and showed off each woman’s unique style.
