Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has issued a firm and detailed letter in response to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican goods. In a letter released Tuesday, Sheinbaum addressed Trump’s claims about migration, drug trafficking, and economic cooperation, emphasizing the need for dialogue over punitive actions.

Claudia Sheinbaum’s Message to Trump‘s Migration and Labor Mobility

Sheinbaum highlighted Mexico’s significant achievements in reducing migration at the border. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data, encounters at the border dropped by 75% between December 2023 and November 2024. She attributed this success to Mexico’s comprehensive migration policies and the CBP One program, which facilitates legal migration. Sheinbaum also called for a new labor mobility model to address the root causes of migration, including poverty and violence.

“Migrant caravans no longer arrive at the border,” she wrote, urging the U.S. to allocate resources toward peace and development rather than conflict.

Mexico’s Efforts in the Fentanyl Crisis

Sheinbaum framed the fentanyl epidemic as a public health issue within the United States. She detailed Mexico’s efforts to combat drug trafficking, including seizing tons of illegal drugs, confiscating over 10,000 firearms, and arresting 15,640 individuals connected to drug-related violence in 2024. She also noted Mexico’s legislative push to classify fentanyl production and trafficking as serious crimes.

However, she pointed out that the chemical precursors used to manufacture synthetic drugs often enter North America through international routes, calling for greater international collaboration.

Sheinbaum criticized the U.S. for its role in the illegal arms trade, stating that 70% of illegal weapons seized in Mexico originate from the United States. She linked these weapons to the violence in Mexico, which she said is a consequence of meeting U.S. drug demand.

“We do not produce these weapons, nor do we consume synthetic drugs,” she wrote. “Tragically, it is in our country that lives are lost.”

Sheinbaum warned that Trump’s proposed tariffs would harm both nations by driving inflation, cutting jobs, and disrupting shared industries. She highlighted the economic interdependence of the two countries, noting that U.S. companies like General Motors, Stellantis, and Ford have relied on Mexico for decades.

“For every tariff, there will be a response in kind,” she said, cautioning that such measures would jeopardize North America’s competitiveness in the global economy.

In her closing remarks, Sheinbaum called for renewed cooperation between the U.S. and Mexico. “Dialogue is the best path to understanding, peace, and prosperity for our nations,” she wrote. She emphasized the importance of maintaining trade partnerships and addressing shared challenges collaboratively.
