Racist Media Coverage of Sussexes’ Nigeria Visit and the African Stereotypes
As Nigerian aunties around the world passionately debate the color of their Aso ebi for the upcoming visit of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to Nigeria, the British media stew in bitterness and hate. With sensationalist headlines, they continue to stir the pot, portraying the visit negatively, relying on outdated stereotypes, and perpetuating racism.

The British media portrays Africa through a narrow lens, often linking the entire continent with safaris, which reflects a racist and ignorant ideology. In contrast to the respectful coverage of other royal family members, the British tabloids have consistently targeted the Sussexes, with Meghan Markle often facing a harsher tone. The media’s attempt to downplay Nigeria’s significance, labeling the trip as a “safari,” ignores the importance of Nigeria in the Invictus Games, which is the primary reason behind the Sussexes’ visit.
Historical Context of Racist Media Coverage of the Sussexes’
Racial bias in media can manifest in various forms, ranging from subtly coded language to explicitly derogatory terms. In the case of Meghan Markle, the British tabloids have often employed both, thereby perpetuating stereotypes and reinforcing an outdated narrative of racial hierarchy.

Even before Meghan’s engagement to Prince Harry, she was subjected to a level of scrutiny that often included racial undertones. For example, a headline from the Daily Mail in 2016 described Meghan’s background in a way that emphasized violence and racial stereotypes:
“Harry’s girl is (almost) straight outta Compton: Gang scarred home of her mother revealed.”
Daily Mail
Meghan grew up in View Park-Windsor Hills, Los Angeles. So, the media’s type of coverage not only misrepresented Meghan’s family and upbringing but also employs racial stereotypes that are deeply rooted in prejudice.
Comparing Coverage of Royal Visits to Racist Media Coverage of Sussexes’ Nigeria Visit
A comparison with the coverage of Prince Charles and Camilla’s visit to Kenya and Prince William and Kate’s Caribbean tour highlights the discrepancy in treatment. The language used is significantly more respectful, emphasizing the positive aspects of their trips. In contrast, the language used for the Sussexes carries undertones of racism and colonialism.

Despite media bias, the Sussexes remain committed to causes such as the Invictus Games, a major international event for wounded veterans. Nigeria, the first African country to participate, has invited Harry and Meghan, and the Nigerian military will ensure they receive adequate security during their visit.
Media Responsibility and the Ethics Lacking
Contrary to media insinuations that attempt to connect the Sussexes’ visit to Nigeria with the Royal Family, this trip is entirely separate, reflecting Harry and Meghan’s dedication to their causes outside of royal duties. The media’s attempts to conflate this visit with a royal agenda not only misrepresents the truth but also undermines the significance of the Invictus Games and Nigeria’s participation.
Attacking Nigeria simply because the Sussexes have chosen to go there represents a new low for the media. The media ignore that Meghan’s ancestors on her mother’s side came from Nigeria through a means which will be discussed another time.
Mr Davies, speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, said: “It’s strange that he personifies the risk factors here and is willing to go to one of the world’s most dangerous countries. I would want to know the rationale for this visit to what is a very dangerous place. He pointed to the Global Peace Index’s measure of safety, security, conflict and militarisation around the world, which places Nigeria 144th out of 163 countries.”
Suggesting that Meghan faces danger in Nigeria while conveniently ignoring the safety concerns she has faced in the UK, even with security, is a blatant double standard. These narratives are not only irresponsible but also serve to inflame public opinion with inaccurate and harmful stereotypes.
The media’s portrayal of the Sussexes is not new but has shown a consistent pattern of targeting Meghan Markle. There are articles repeatedly emphasizing negative and inaccurate stereotypes, leading to unfair and unjust coverage. The media must evolve and provide fair coverage to all public figures, regardless of their race or status.
