If Hollywood’s grand AI experiment was supposed to convince us that human actors are becoming obsolete, Tilly Norwood may want to stop doing interviews.

The controversial AI-generated “actress” appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored alongside actual human actor Tom Conti to promote her upcoming film Misaligned. During the conversation, Conti asked a fairly straightforward question: are Tilly’s co-stars real actors or computer-generated too?

Tilly initially dodged the question with a polished little speech about how the movie still involves real directors, writers and editors. Conti, correctly sensing that she had not answered him, asked again. Tilly finally explained that the other performers are “digital twins” like her — and then abruptly switched from English to Cantonese for roughly 15 seconds.  

Conti and Morgan’s expressions were priceless, although Morgan still topped them when a Good Morning Britain weatherman berated him and he stormed off the set.

When Morgan asked why she had randomly changed languages, Tilly blamed a “little hiccup” and said her “wires” sometimes get crossed. Her creators later pushed back on descriptions of the moment as a malfunction, arguing that it demonstrated her multilingual abilities. Sure. Nothing says “the future of cinema” quite like your leading lady accidentally changing languages in the middle of answering a basic question.  

And this is what makes the whole thing so funny. Tech companies keep insisting that generative AI can disrupt entire creative industries, but their own products keep showing why a photorealistic face and generated dialogue cannot simply replace human performers.

There is something particularly absurd about watching two human beings conduct a serious promotional interview with a computer-generated character that has spent much of this month making the media rounds, only for the computer to forget which language the conversation is happening in.

The larger issue is less amusing. SAG-AFTRA has already criticised Norwood, stressing that she is a computer-generated character built from technology trained on the work of real performers. Actors have questioned why Hollywood needs synthetic women assembled from existing human faces and performances when thousands of actual actresses are already fighting for work.  

And that is where the AI hype becomes exhausting. This technology does not emerge from nowhere. Human writing, voices, images and performances sit underneath these systems, while companies increasingly market the finished product as though it spontaneously created itself.

Tilly’s Cantonese detour may be hilarious, but it also exposes the sales pitch. Tech companies are selling this as the inevitable future of entertainment, yet their “actress” cannot even make it through a publicity interview without suddenly switching languages.

Tom Conti asking, essentially, did you get all that, Piers? may end up being the best review of the whole experiment.
