New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced an all-female transition team on Wednesday. The move marks a historic step as he prepares to take office in January 2026. The 34-year-old Democrat is the city’s first Muslim mayor and its youngest in over a century. He said the appointments reflect his commitment to building “a compassionate, competent administration.”
Former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan will co-chair the transition team, joined by political strategist Elana Leopold as executive director. Other members include Grace Bonilla, Maria Torres-Springer, and Melanie Hartzog, all veterans of New York City government and nonprofit leadership. Mamdani emphasized that the team’s diversity and experience would help deliver on his campaign promises of free child care, rent freezes, and a new Department of Community Safety.
Khan, known for her aggressive antitrust approach against major corporations like Amazon and Microsoft, described Mamdani’s victory as “a rejection of outsized corporate power.” Her appointment drew praise from progressive groups but criticism from business leaders wary of her regulatory record. Tech industry figures have already voiced concerns about potential friction between City Hall and Wall Street interests.

Media reactions to Mamdani’s selections have mirrored the political divide.Left-leaning outlets praised the appointments as “a model of inclusive governance.” Conservative commentators questioned whether the all-female team was “ideologically driven.” Centrist coverage focused on balancing Mamdani’s reformist agenda with the practical challenges of running the city. Reporters also noted his need to manage relations with Governor Kathy Hochul and the NYPD.
With New York’s highest voter turnout in five decades, Mamdani faces pressure to deliver on his affordability agenda. He must also unite a politically divided city. In his victory speech, he said, “The poetry of the campaign ends here. Now comes the work of building a city that works for everyone.”
