Look, we love Zendaya. We really do. The woman has never missed a step on the red carpet, and her Met Gala looks live rent-free in fashion history. So when news broke that she would sit out this year’s event, people noticed.
The official reason makes sense. Zendaya has been everywhere. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she is missing the 2026 Met Gala after a packed year tied to The Drama, Euphoria season three, The Odyssey, Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Dune 3. Honestly, Zendaya deserves a gold medal for performing a marathon in couture.
As The Hollywood Reporter notes:
The publication reports that the actress is taking a break from the spotlight after back-to-back press tours for her latest projects, The Drama and Euphoria season three. The news comes just days before the annual fashion event amid a packed year for the Emmy winner. A24’s The Drama, in which she stars opposite Robert Pattinson, premiered April 3, while the long-awaited third season of Euphoria debuted on HBO April 12. Still ahead, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey arrives July 17, Spider-Man: Brand New Day premieres July 31 and the third Dune film is set for Dec. 18.
So yes, Zendaya is busy, and nobody can pretend otherwise. But the timing still feels loaded. Zendaya has attended the Met Gala several times before, including as a co-chair. She is one of the rare celebrities who can turn the Met steps into an actual fashion moment, not just a designer placement. When she shows up, the internet stops. When she skips, people ask questions. This year, those questions come with a very specific billionaire-shaped shadow.

The Bezos Met Gala optics are messy
Here’s our take: this may be a quiet boycott of the Bezos-sponsored gala, wrapped in a convenient “scheduling conflict” bow. And honestly? Smart move. Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sanchez, are lead sponsors and honorary chairs this year. Sanchez is also being styled by none other than Law Roach, yes, the Law Roach, Zendaya’s longtime stylist and fashion soulmate. That makes things messy. If Roach is dressing Sanchez, then Zendaya showing up would feel like cosigning the whole Bezos circus. By citing “overexposure” and a packed press tour, she gets to dodge the drama without actually saying the quiet part out loud.
And can we be honest with ourselves, the Met Gala has become a bit of a dystopian joke. Tech bros buying their way in, billionaires partying while the world burns. Last year felt like The Hunger Games. This year, with Bezos at the helm, it’s giving full-on Capitol energy. We don’t blame any celebrity who wants to distance themselves.
Of course, there are plenty of people side-eyeing the silence on bigger issues in the world, and we get that, too. But on this specific move, skipping the Bezos Gala, we’ll give her a pass. She’s not stupid. She knows her brand, she knows the optics, and she’s choosing to sit this one out while letting “scheduling” take the heat. So let’s allow Zendaya to take her break. Not that she needs anyone’s permission. We can’t wait to see her on the Dune red carpet.
