Zendaya has had a year and she is ready to take a break. The actress, who has been everywhere lately promoting, The Drama, Euphoria, Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, told Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet that after a hectic year of nonstop global press, she cannot wait to “disappear for a little bit.”

Despite calling the experience special and worthwhile, Zendaya made it clear that the pace has been exhausting. In the video, she appears in a stunning white feathered gown by Matières Fécales, discussing the whirlwind of constant travel and new locations. She playfully responded to questions while noting she would not change anything, but also made it clear she needs a break.

The Right to Disappear

Zendaya taking a break makes complete sense. She has spent months filming major projects, travelling, attending premieres and carrying several press campaigns at once. Wealth and privilege may make the logistics easier, but they do not make someone immune to exhaustion. Constantly being photographed, interviewed and expected to remain polished and engaging would drain anyone.

What is frustrating is how quickly a successful woman becomes “overexposed.” Audiences celebrate women while they are rising, then punish them for being visible once they reach the top. Male actors can appear in project after project and are usually described as booked, ambitious or versatile. Women are more likely to be treated as irritating simply for working consistently.

Zendaya also seems aware of how fickle public affection can be. Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lawrence and other actresses have experienced the same cycle: praise, saturation, backlash and eventual rediscovery. Stepping away before the culture decides it is tired of her is not weakness. It is smart self-preservation.

There is also no need to speculate that a break must mean pregnancy or starting a family. A woman should be allowed to rest without the public immediately turning her private life into another storyline. Zendaya has worked hard, fulfilled her promotional obligations and helped generate attention for the projects she believes in. She has earned the right to disappear for a while, enjoy her life and return when she feels ready. But until then we will look forward to seeing her Dune: Part Three at the end of the year.
