King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV has died at just 34, bringing an extraordinary reign that began when he was only three years old to an abrupt end. The Tooro Kingdom announced his death on Thursday night, prompting an outpouring of grief in Uganda for a monarch many of his subjects had quite literally watched grow up.  

His death has also raised immediate questions because details about his illness were closely guarded. The kingdom has not officially disclosed a cause of death, although reports say Oyo had been seriously ill and receiving medical treatment in the United States. Just weeks earlier, Tooro officials had pushed back against reports that he was critically ill, while a Ugandan minister asked the public to pray for him only a day before his death was announced.  

For people outside Uganda, the story may also be an introduction to a monarchy that works very differently from the European royal families that dominate international coverage. Oyo held no governing power, but as Omukama of Tooro he carried enormous cultural significance, representing a kingdom of millions and serving as a symbol of heritage, continuity and community.  

I also think a lot of people outside Uganda were only just realising how significant he was to the Tooro Kingdom. He became king as a child, so for many people there, he was not just a distant royal figure. They had effectively watched him grow up in public. For the Ugandan people, he was widely respected, kept a relatively low profile and did not seem to carry the kind of public scandals that often follow royal families.

And perhaps that is why the reaction has been so striking. At 34, Oyo was far too young for his death to feel expected. For the Batooro people who had known him as their king since childhood, this is not simply the death of another royal figure. It is the end of a reign that lasted almost his entire life.
