Prince Harry has resigned from Sentebale, the charity he co-founded in Lesotho nearly 20 years ago, following a dramatic leadership dispute that led to the entire board walking away in protest. His co-founder, Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, also stepped down. The timing—just months before Sentebale’s 20th anniversary—has left supporters stunned. But while the facts point to a serious governance crisis, British media outlets are already using the story to paint Prince Harry in the worst possible light.

A Charity Built in Memory of Their Mothers
Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso founded Sentebale in 2006 after Harry’s life-changing gap year trip to Lesotho in 2004. The name Sentebale means “forget-me-not” in Sesotho. The charity was set up to honor their late mothers and to help vulnerable children in Lesotho and Botswana, especially those affected by HIV and AIDS.
Over the years, Sentebale gained global support and raised millions through events, including charity polo matches and concerts. It became one of the few patronages Prince Harry kept after stepping down as a senior royal.

Tensions Grow Behind Closed Doors
Problems began in 2024 when the charity announced a major shift in strategy. Sentebale planned to move fundraising efforts to Africa and refocus on local leadership. Dr. Sophie Chandauka, a Zimbabwe-born lawyer, was appointed chair of the board. According to reports, trustees were not happy with the direction the charity was taking under her leadership.

When she refused, the board attempted to remove her but were blocked by a court injunction. Dr. Chandauka then filed a lawsuit against the charity to keep her position. This legal battle created what Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso described as an “untenable situation.”
Harry and Seeiso Step Down in Solidarity
On March 25, 2025, both princes released a joint statement confirming they had stepped down as patrons. They did so to support the trustees who had also resigned. “With heavy hearts, we have resigned… in support of and solidarity with the board of trustees who have had to do the same,” they said. The statement also made clear that the relationship between the chair and the trustees had “broken down beyond repair.”
“What’s transpired is unthinkable. We are in shock that we have to do this, but we have a continued responsibility to Sentebale’s beneficiaries.”
They plan to share their concerns with the Charity Commission, which is now reviewing the situation.
Sophie Chandauka Speaks Out
In a strongly worded statement, Dr. Chandauka said she joined Sentebale to promote integrity and fairness. She claimed she had become a whistleblower, calling out “bullying, harassment, misogyny, and misogynoir” within the charity. Without naming anyone directly, she accused others of playing the victim in the media while using their power to push her out.

Altogether, seven individuals resigned from Sentebale amid the leadership fallout — not including the two co-founders. This means nine respected figures, including British and African trustees, chose to walk away due to the dispute with board chair Dr. Sophie Chandauka. Among them was Mark Dyer, a longtime friend of Prince Harry, and Audrey Kgosidintsi, herself a Black African woman. When a diverse and experienced board resigns in full, it reflects serious internal breakdown — and raises difficult questions about Chandauka’s leadership.
The Media’s Spin Begins
While the facts show that Prince Harry resigned in support of a board that no longer trusted the chair, some media outlets have chosen to frame the story as a personal embarrassment. Headlines from tabloids like the Daily Mail call it a “humiliating setback” and suggest the charity has “exploded” under Harry’s watch.
Royal reporters wasted no time turning the situation into a character smear, with some framing Harry’s decision as a personal failure rather than a principled stand. They downplayed the governance crisis and instead revived familiar tropes: that Harry is reckless, out of his depth, or adrift without the royal family. Meanwhile, Prince Harry has stayed focused on the real issue — protecting the mission of the charity and the young people it serves.

Why This Story Matters
Sentebale supports children and communities who rely on stability, leadership, and international funding. The loss of its founders and entire board puts that future at risk. The press should focus on the children, the charity’s work, and how to move forward — not on tearing down Harry over a dispute he did not create.
Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso have shown dignity by stepping aside. They’ve taken a painful step to protect the integrity of the charity they built from the ground up. Their actions speak louder than tabloid headlines. As of now, the Charity Commission continues its investigation. Sentebale has announced a new board structure and leadership based in Southern Africa.
