Elon Musk has triggered a political firestorm by announcing the launch of his America Party. Donald Trump responded with scorn, calling the move “ridiculous” and describing Musk as a “train wreck.” Once considered close allies, the two billionaires now find themselves locked in a public feud with real implications for the 2026 midterms.
Musk claimed that 65% of users on X backed the idea of a third party. The poll, seen by more than 1.2 million people, helped push him to declare the formation of the America Party. He argued the two-party system has failed and that his goal is to restore political freedom by targeting key Senate and House races. Trump, now president again and running for reelection, sees the move as a threat to Republican unity and his own political strategy.
Musk Launches America Party And Pushes Back On Trump
Musk announced the America Party in early July, just weeks after criticizing Trump’s latest tax bill. He took issue with the removal of electric vehicle tax credits, warning it would hurt Tesla and the wider clean energy industry. He also cited concerns over growing authoritarianism and argued that both parties have lost public trust.
The new party’s early agenda includes opposing members of Congress who supported the tax changes. Musk says the aim is not to field a presidential candidate but to disrupt select congressional races. On X, he framed the initiative as a bid to return the country to “freedom and innovation.” Critics argue the move is less about democratic reform and more about protecting Musk’s business interests.

Trump Responds With Insults And Warns Of Chaos
Donald Trump wasted no time in attacking Musk. On Truth Social, he dismissed the America Party as a “joke” and claimed Musk had “gone off the rails.” He argued that the United States has always been a two-party country and said Musk’s involvement would cause “disruption and chaos.”

Trump allies joined in. His former Treasury Secretary told the press that Musk should “stay in his lane” and stop trying to play politician. Others said Musk’s motives are selfish, pointing to his anger over tax policy and his failure to support Trump’s broader economic plans.
The feud now dominates headlines and social media, with both men using their platforms to attack each other. What began as an ideological rift has become personal. Whether the America Party succeeds or not, the fallout reveals a deep fracture among America’s right-wing power brokers.
