The Royal Family Looked Very Busy Right When The Sussexes Showed Up, And The Timing Is Interesting

Prince Harry and Meghan Sussex, really do seem to be the best productivity hack the royal family has ever had. Nothing appears to get Prince William and Kate Middleton moving faster than Harry landing in the UK with a diary full of actual work. Suddenly, the Wales calendar starts filling up. Suddenly, there are outings, photo calls, Wimbledon appearances and soft-focus family moments. The UK taxpayer should be sending the Sussexes a thank-you card.

Wimbledon may be recorded or treated as a patronage appearance, but let’s be honest: sitting in the Royal Box at tennis is not the same as frontline charity work. Enjoying a day of tennis in the Royal Box is not exactly public service. It is a privilege, not a shift.

That is why Camilla Tominey calling Harry and Meghan a “fading brand” is laughable. If anyone’s brand looks faded, it is William and Kate’s. They can step out repeatedly, brief the press, roll out glossy appearances and still struggle to command the same level of public curiosity.

There have been penguins, lemurs, a police dog wearing shoes, Pooh sticks, an engagement filmed by drones and a behind-the-scenes farewell to the man who would have taken a bullet for the King.

Welcome to a week in the life of the working Royal family. True, this just happened to be the week in which the Duke of Sussex was in town. So it may have been pure coincidence that from Windsor to Wimbledon, Bovington to Borsetshire – via a cameo appearance from the Duchess of Edinburgh on The Archers – the nation’s working royals often found themselves elsewhere, hard at it, on the road.

As the Duke of Sussex agonised over whether to bring his family to Britain, where to stay and how to travel, the Royal family has tried, with some limited success, not to enter the fray.

Away from “Monarchy HQ”, it was a deft way of distancing the King and Queen from what has become known as the “Sussex circus”, and keep it personal. It brought to a close a week in which the Sussexes have provided maximum drama and the Royal family have been out in force on the day job.

With nearly 50 engagements between them (not counting private meetings, correspondence, or official entertaining), was it busier than usual? “It’s an entirely standard week,” insists a source.

The Real Story

That is where the “irrelevant Sussexes” argument falls apart. Irrelevant people do not send the press scrambling. The timing had the feel of counter-programming. Irrelevant people do not make the future king and queen look suddenly busy. And this is not new.

We have seen this pattern before. When Harry returned to the UK to privately honour Queen Elizabeth II in September 2025, suddenly William and Kate appeared at the Women’s Institute in Berkshire, Queen Elizabeth’s former patronage. The previous year, William had no recorded Court Circular engagement on the Queen’s death anniversary. But once Harry was back in the country, duty magically became urgent.

Harry’s work has substance: Invictus, veterans, wounded service members, bereaved military children, and WellChild families. Meghan, even in her absence from Instagram and public life, still has the power to unsettle the institution. Together, they have what the palace cannot manufacture: genuine public curiosity, interest and affection.

The Waleses may show up when Harry is in town, but showing up is not the same as doing meaningful work. And if Harry and Meghan are supposedly fading, why does the whole royal machine still seem to wake up every time they arrive?
