Selma Blair was arrested at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport on Sunday night following a disturbing incident aboard a Delta Air Lines flight.
The actress, best known for Cruel Intentions, Legally Blonde and Hellboy, is accused of physically assaulting two flight attendants during a flight from Los Angeles to New York.
One flight attendant reportedly required hospital treatment. Blair was also accused of assaulting a police officer and a nurse after authorities took her into custody. Her representative says the actress experienced a medical emergency that contributed to the alleged behaviour. Blair has since appeared in court and was released on bond.
Reuters reported on October 12 that Port Authority police responded to a complaint about a physically abusive passenger aboard the Delta flight. Officers identified Blair and detained her after the aircraft arrived at JFK. Two flight attendants reported injuries, and one was transported to hospital. Blair’s representative confirmed that she received medical attention and was subsequently in stable condition.
This is a serious situation. And there are several aspects of it that deserve attention. Not least the flight attendants who were simply trying to do their jobs.
Flight Attendants Are Not There to Absorb Abuse
Flight attendants have an extraordinarily difficult job. They deal with anxious passengers. Delays. Medical emergencies. People who have been drinking. People who refuse instructions. And occasionally, passengers whose behaviour becomes physically dangerous.
They are also responsible for maintaining safety inside an aircraft where everybody is confined together. That is a considerable amount of responsibility. And it makes allegations of physical assault particularly concerning.
Several entertainment outlets have reported that Blair allegedly punched one flight attendant and bit another. Those details remain allegations. But police have confirmed that two flight attendants reported injuries. One required hospital evaluation.
That should not become a footnote simply because the passenger involved is famous. Whatever circumstances contributed to the incident, the employees deserve appropriate medical care, support and a thorough investigation. Nobody should have to accept physical violence as an ordinary occupational hazard.
Blair’s Representative Says She Experienced a Medical Emergency
Blair’s representative has offered an explanation for what happened. According to the statement, the actress experienced a medical emergency during the flight. Her attorney subsequently argued in court that her behaviour was not intentional and described circumstances involving medication and disorientation.
Those claims are relevant. Blair has publicly discussed living with multiple sclerosis since announcing her diagnosis in 2018. She has also spoken extensively about her experiences with treatment, disability and changes to her daily life.
But there is an important distinction here. We know Blair has multiple sclerosis because she has discussed it publicly. We do not independently know what caused her behaviour aboard this particular flight. Her medical condition should not automatically be treated as an explanation for every action attributed to her.
And nobody should attempt to diagnose her from newspaper reports. The appropriate place to examine the medical evidence is through the legal proceedings.

The incident did not end when the aircraft landed. According to court reporting, Blair was also accused of kicking a police officer and a nurse after being taken into custody and transported for medical evaluation. She was charged with two counts of second-degree assault in New York.
Her lawyer entered a not guilty plea on her behalf. The FBI is separately examining the allegations involving the flight attendants. The allegations aboard the aircraft and the accusations involving the police officer and nurse are being addressed through different legal processes.

This Isn’t Blair’s First Difficult Flight
In 2016, Blair apologised after an incident aboard a flight from Cancún to Los Angeles. She later said she had mixed alcohol with medication and experienced a blackout. That previous episode is documented.
But it would be irresponsible to assume that the same circumstances caused the latest incident. Her representative has described a medical emergency. Investigators and the courts will have to establish the relevant facts.
For now, the most important thing is that the people involved receive appropriate care and that the allegations are investigated properly.
Being a celebrity does not place somebody above the rules. But neither should an arrest become an invitation to make unsupported claims about their health. There is enough verified information here to discuss the incident without inventing the rest.
