Prince William and Kate Middleton attended the world premiere of Digger in London on Tuesday, but Tom Cruise somehow ended the night performing the role of Kate’s attentive escort.

The photographs look less like a married couple greeting a film star and more like three powerful people carefully assembled for a publicity shot. Kate smiles brightly at Cruise. Cruise directs his full movie-star intensity towards Kate. William repeatedly appears detached from the action, either walking ahead or standing nearby with the strained expression of a man waiting for someone to tell him the engagement is over.

The most revealing moment came when the group approached a flight of stairs. Kate was wearing a floor-length Jenny Packham gown, high heels and enough royal jewellery to require its own insurance policy. Cruise turned towards her, extended his hand and carefully guided her down. William continued ahead without appearing to look back.

Kate fully participated in that royal-Hollywood spectacle. She arrived in a dramatic purple Jenny Packham gown, the Queen Mother’s Amethyst Sautoir Necklace and Diana’s Collingwood pearl earrings. The necklace was given to the future Queen Mother by Queen Alexandra for her 1923 wedding and was later worn by Camilla to the Skyfall premiere in 2012.

Cruise’s gesture required almost no effort. It lasted seconds and produced photographs that made him look attentive, polished and chivalrous. That does not mean he is any of those things in private. It means that after more than 40 years of managing his image, Cruise knows how to locate a camera and manufacture a flattering moment.

William was born into a family whose survival depends on carefully staged appearances, yet he somehow allowed Tom Cruise to outmanoeuvre him at basic public relations. That takes talent. Worse, this was a repeat performance.

At the 2022 London premiere of Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise took Kate’s hand as she ascended a flight of stairs. Four years later, he helped her down another set of steps at the Digger premiere. Cruise attentive, Kate receptive and William present mainly in the geographical sense.

One occurrence can be dismissed as timing. Twice begins to look like a pattern, or, at minimum, proof that nobody at Kensington Palace studies the previous year’s footage.

Online, the images inspired comparisons to a dystopian procession in which William marched ahead while Kate followed under another man’s supervision. Other viewers joked that it requires a remarkable degree of royal indifference to place Tom Cruise in a photograph and make him appear like the considerate one.

That does not prove William dislikes his wife, resents her attention or behaves the same way in private. Body language is not a marriage certificate, medical diagnosis or window into somebody’s thoughts. However, public figures communicate through repeated gestures, especially when their entire job involves being watched.

William’s defenders may call his behaviour respect for Kate’s independence. That explanation would sound more convincing if William had not repeatedly walked ahead while Kate managed gowns, heels, aircraft stairs or their children. Respecting her independence is one thing; treating his wife like a member of another tour group is quite another.

The event itself was the 73rd Royal Film Performance, held at the ODEON Luxe Leicester Square in support of the Film and TV Charity. The organisation provides financial, practical and emotional assistance to people working in Britain’s film, television and cinema industries. William and Kate therefore had a legitimate charitable reason to attend, and there is no evidence that they personally selected Digger as the featured film.

Nevertheless, their presence handed Cruise and Warner Bros. a publicity opportunity that money alone cannot officially purchase. Digger is already being promoted as a major awards vehicle for Cruise. Now, the premiere coverage now pairs Cruise and his film with photographs of Britain’s Prince and Princess of Wales.
