Thomas Markle Sr., 82, is under investigation in the Philippines following allegations that child sexual abuse material was discovered among belongings left at his former home in Cebu.

The investigation began after his son, Thomas Markle Jr., reported discovering photographs and videos allegedly depicting the sexual abuse of children. Philippine National Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has also said officers will coordinate with law enforcement agencies in the United States and United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, London’s Metropolitan Police has acknowledged receiving allegations concerning Markle in January 2019 but confirmed that the information was never passed to other law enforcement agencies. Markle has strongly denied the allegations, describing them as lies. No criminal charges have been announced. Here is a chronological account of the allegations, police responses and latest developments.

The Warning British Police Received

The Metropolitan Police received a letter in January 2019 containing allegations of criminal conduct outside the United Kingdom. Meghan says she was informed of the allegations and assured they were being investigated.

The Met initially said it could not confirm receiving the letter before acknowledging its existence. It also admitted that officers had not shared the allegations with other law enforcement agencies.

Rather than focusing on whether Meghan remembered the precise dates, the pressing question is why police failed to share serious allegations potentially involving children with US authorities for investigation. The Met is now reviewing its handling of the letter and considering referring itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct over its failure to pass on the information.

Caroline Graham Witnessed Meghan’s Letter Arrive

In December 2025, Thomas Markle underwent a leg amputation in the Philippines. Meghan subsequently sent him a private letter, which The Sun reported confronted him over allegations of child sexual abuse and stated that he would never meet Archie and Lilibet.

Now, on October 25, 2026, Mail on Sunday journalist Caroline Graham published footage of the letter’s delivery. Graham says she was present in Thomas’s hospital room but never learned what Meghan wrote.

“The lawyer was carrying a clutch of legal documents. The women explained that they had come to deliver a letter from his daughter Meghan and that Mr Markle would have to sign paperwork authorising them to film the encounter so that footage could be sent to Meghan’s office as proof that the sealed letter had been handed to him.”

“I immediately offered to leave the room but Mr Markle asked me to stay.”

According to Graham, Thomas specifically requested that she make her own recording of the letter’s delivery, demonstrating just how closely the journalist had become involved in his private affairs.

Graham acknowledges becoming friends with Thomas Markle in 2018. Since then, she has reported extensively on his grievances against Meghan, and accompanied him through personal crises. Graham also helped the Mail on Sunday publish extracts from Meghan’s 2018 letter to her father in 2019. Meghan subsequently sued the newspaper’s publisher, Associated Newspapers, and won her case for misuse of private information and copyright infringement.

Following that judgment, one would reasonably expect Associated Newspapers to reassess Graham’s involvement with Thomas Markle. Instead, she continued reporting on a man she openly calls her friend and has even described as “something of a father figure.” Her extraordinary access raises serious questions about journalistic independence and editorial oversight. Why did the newspaper continue allowing a journalist with such a close personal relationship to cover the same family dispute that had already resulted in a successful lawsuit against its publisher?

Thomas Markle Says He Has Dementia and Cannot Recall the Letter

Graham’s latest report also contains a significant new disclosure. She says Thomas Markle has been diagnosed with dementia and authorised the newspaper to reveal his condition.

“I remember getting the letter but I don’t remember anything else about it. I’m happy for people to see the video. I have nothing to hide.”

“If Meghan says that’s what she wrote, then she’s probably right. I was very sick. I have memory issues. I know there was a letter, but I don’t remember what it said.”

Following The Sun’s report about Meghan’s letter, Graham contacted him at a rehabilitation centre in Florida. Graham also reports that the letter’s present whereabouts are unknown.

What a remarkable series of developments. Caroline Graham insists she never read Meghan’s letter, Thomas Markle says he cannot remember its contents, and its whereabouts remain unknown. His dementia diagnosis has also emerged just as investigators examine serious allegations against him. Yet some still question why Meghan wanted proof that her father received the letter. Given these circumstances, wasn’t documenting its delivery a sensible precaution?

For eight years, Thomas publicly aired his grievances against Meghan, even sharing her earlier private correspondence with the press. Now, the December 2025 letter reportedly explains why she will never allow him to meet her children, but its contents remain unverified. The contrast between his willingness to publicise Meghan’s previous letter and his inability to account for this one is difficult to ignore.

What matters is that investigators establish the facts through independently verifiable evidence rather than competing family recollections or tabloid exclusives.

Philippine Minister Says Forensic Results Are Expected Within a Week

The most significant development came from the Philippines. Speaking to The Guardian, interior minister Jonvic Remulla described the preliminary indications against Thomas Markle in exceptionally serious terms.

“In these cases where family disputes are mixed up, we have to consider all the angles. Right now all signs point to a possible sex offender of the grossest kind. We want to be sure before we release the findings. The forensics data will be complete in a week.”

Philippine police have examined Thomas’s former home in Cebu, where suspected child sexual abuse material and electronic devices were reportedly recovered.

The investigation follows Thomas Markle Jr.’s allegations that he discovered hundreds, possibly thousands, of images on devices associated with his father. The FBI has confirmed awareness of the allegations and said it would support Philippine authorities where appropriate.

The priority should be determining whether children were harmed, identifying anyone responsible and establishing why information received by British police in 2019 was not shared with other law enforcement agencies. Those questions deserve far more attention than another round of speculation about Meghan’s family relationships.

Thomas Markle Sr. strongly denies possessing child sexual abuse material and maintains that the electronic devices had been outside his control for an extended period.

In a separate Mail on Sunday interview, Thomas Markle acknowledged paying for sex during visits to Southeast Asia but insisted he had never engaged in sexual activity with anyone under 18. His admission comes as investigators examine separate allegations involving child sexual abuse material, which he continues to deny.

Samantha Markle Attacks Her Mother Roslyn Loveless, Who Can No Longer Defend Herself

Sunday’s third development came through another report by Caroline Graham for The Mail on Sunday. In it, Samantha Markle questioned claims that her late mother, Roslyn Loveless, had written the 2019 police warning containing allegations against Thomas Markle Sr.

“If my mother wrote that letter then she should not be considered credible.”

However, ITV News has since reported that Roslyn Loveless was indeed the author of the 2019 police warning. The letter reportedly contained serious allegations about Thomas Markle’s conduct during trips to Thailand and the Philippines. While Thomas denies wrongdoing, Samantha’s criticism of her late mother’s credibility does nothing to establish that those allegations were false.

Samantha claimed Roslyn had struggled with alcoholism and harboured resentment towards Thomas following their divorce. Thomas similarly questioned whether Roslyn would have written such a letter independently. But there is something striking about this latest attempt to discredit Roslyn.

In May 2019, Roslyn publicly criticised Thomas while explicitly rejecting the suggestion that bitterness motivated her concerns. She said she was speaking out because she worried about Meghan and Archie.

Now, approximately two years after Roslyn’s death, her former husband and daughter are presenting a very different account of her character.

Their claims do not establish that Roslyn’s alleged warning was fabricated. Nor does Samantha’s assertion that her mother never mentioned the allegations to her prove Roslyn never made them.

Roslyn can no longer explain what she knew or why she spoke publicly in 2019. But the Metropolitan Police can explain how it handled the warning it received, while Philippine investigators work to establish what the digital evidence reveals. Those findings matter far more than another round of accusations from the Markle family.
