Perez Hilton’s family has issued a new statement following the disturbing livestream incident at his Miami home, revealing that his children, niece and sister were inside shortly before the broadcast began. TikTok has since banned Hilton’s account for violating its rules on self-harm, after acknowledging that a moderation error allowed the livestream to remain online longer than it should have.  

According to the family, Hilton was experiencing a severe mental health crisis and harming himself when relatives removed the children from the home. Their statement now focuses on helping the children recover, asking media and content creators to stay away from the property, and giving the family space to restore a sense of safety and normalcy.

Just minutes before the public livestream incident, Perez’s children, niece, and sister were inside the home. When it became clear that Perez was experiencing a severe mental health crisis and harming himself, they immediately fled to protect the children from witnessing any further trauma. The most important people in this story are the children. Whatever anyone thinks of Perez Hilton, they did not choose his public career, his controversies or the circumstances surrounding this incident. If they were present during any part of the crisis, they deserve privacy, stability and professional support without becoming another source of online content.

There is also an uncomfortable irony here. Perez built much of his career by denying other celebrities the very privacy his family is now asking the public to respect. He was notoriously cruel during some of the most vulnerable moments in other people’s lives, including women experiencing addiction, grief and mental health crises. That history is relevant, but it should not become an excuse to repeat the same behaviour against his children.

Two things can be true at once. Perez can be held accountable for decades of harmful conduct, and people can still recognise that a serious mental health crisis should not become entertainment. Compassion does not require rewriting his history, and criticism does not require celebrating someone’s collapse.
