Octavia Spencer Won Her First Emmy. Deadline Made It About David Attenborough

Octavia Spencer finally won her first Emmy on Saturday night, taking home Outstanding Narrator for Investigation Discovery’s Lost Women of Alaska. After previous Emmy nominations in 2020 and 2024, it should have been a straightforward milestone: an Oscar-winning actress adding television’s highest honour to her career while lending her voice to a series centred on missing and murdered Indigenous women.

Deadline found another way to frame it. Its original headline read: “Octavia Spencer Wins First Emmy, Stops Sir David Attenborough Becoming Oldest Emmy Winner Ever.” Deadline made Spencer’s achievement secondary to the age record Attenborough did not break.

The underlying statistic was technically correct. Had Attenborough won, he would have surpassed Norman Lear as the oldest Primetime Emmy winner. But accuracy does not make editorial framing neutral. Spencer did not “stop” Attenborough from achieving anything. She won an award for her own work.

Deadline later changed the headline to centre Spencer’s first Emmy, but the article itself kept framing her win through what Attenborough failed to achieve. It opened by noting that Norman Lear would remain the oldest Emmy winner, described Spencer’s victory as a “surprise win” over Attenborough, and explicitly said her win “prevents 100-year-old Attenborough from becoming the oldest Emmy winner ever.”

The piece returned to the same angle again near the end, calling Spencer’s victory a “shock win” and stressing that Lear’s record remained intact, before adding that Attenborough would have to be “consoled” by still holding other age-related records. So while the headline changed, the article continued to treat Spencer’s first Emmy as a disruption to Attenborough’s milestone rather than simply as her own achievement.

And therein lies the problem. A Black woman winning her first Emmy somehow became a story about what a celebrated white British man lost. Spencer deserved to be the subject of her own achievement, not the supporting character in someone else’s record attempt.
