Octavia Spencer’s kindness has once again made headlines, this time for helping her Ma co-star Gianni Paolo at a crucial moment in his career. During the 2019 psychological thriller’s press tour, Paolo faced a financial hurdle that could have limited his professional exposure. Instead of letting him miss out, Spencer stepped in and made sure he had the same opportunities as his castmates.

Octavia Spencer Covered the Cost of a Publicist

Gianni Paolo recently revealed that before Ma’s release, he was in $20,000 worth of credit card debt and had earned only $6,000 from the film. With a publicist costing around $5,000 a month, he decided he could not afford the expense.

“I didn’t have any money for a publicist because at this time, this was pre-‘Ma’ coming out and I was like, I just can’t spend $5,000 a month for a publicist. I only made $6,000 on the movie. I’m in $20,000 worth of credit card debt. So, I’m like, I’m just not going to get a publicist… [Octavia] was talking about doing press for the movie and this was my first real big thing. She basically was like, ‘We’re going to do press. [Get a] publicist.’ And I told her, I don’t have the money to do that. I’m not going to get a publicist… She called her publicist, paid for it completely and then set me up with her whole team. And then [she] said, ‘Now you have a publicist.’ She didn’t ask for the money back. Never.” Paolo told Boyfriend Material Podcast.

Spencer, who was already an established star, refused to let him navigate the press tour without proper representation. She called her own publicist, paid the bill in full, and set Paolo up with her entire team. She never asked for repayment, turning what could have been a missed opportunity into a career-building moment.

The High Cost of Visibility for Rising Actors

Paolo’s story underscores a lesser-known reality of Hollywood: being cast in a film is only part of the journey. For emerging actors, the promotional circuit can be just as critical to long-term success. Yet the costs associated with it, stylists, travel, and publicists, are often far beyond what early paychecks can cover. Without Spencer’s intervention, Paolo might have attended Ma’s press events without the media support needed to build his public profile, potentially affecting his career momentum.

A Rare Gesture in a Competitive Industry

Acts of generosity like Spencer’s are not common in the entertainment business, where competition and self-promotion often dominate. By using her own resources to support a co-star, she demonstrated a level of mentorship and solidarity that stands out in Hollywood. Paolo has since spoken about how her gesture not only eased his financial stress but also gave him confidence during his first major publicity run. It’s a reminder of how established actors can help level the playing field for newcomers.
