In a week that reminded us how quickly women in music are expected to defend their worth, Nicki Minaj reignited her reputation for online hostility, this time by targeting SZA. What began as cryptic posts turned into a barrage of insults, personal jabs, and veiled threats. But as Nicki escalated, SZA didn’t stoop.
Nicki used her massive X following to launch a string of posts tearing into SZA’s success, artistry, and appearance. She mocked SZA’s freckles, called her “ugly,” and questioned her ability to headline shows, all while flaunting her own credentials. The attacks didn’t stop there. Nicki also dragged in Top Dawg Entertainment executive Terrence “Punch” Henderson and name-dropped Desiree Perez and an unrelated lawsuit, classic deflection tactics in a playbook that’s worn thin.

Nicki Minaj Goes Low While Claiming The High Ground
Nicki’s tweets were riddled with contradictions. She claimed icon status while using it to shame another Black woman’s career trajectory. She accused SZA of being manufactured, forgettable, and undeserving of her platform, all while performing the very behavior that so many women, especially Black women in entertainment, are routinely punished for: being visible, being excellent, and being unwilling to shrink.
Wait. Does Sza think she’s more successful than me? Lol yall catch me up pls. Sza if every song you’ve ever done vanished right now the music business wouldn’t even miss you. I’ve been to countries that never heard of you. I know you’re not THAT stupid are you? Stadiums? Did you… pic.twitter.com/0fKGvT1Zow

Instead of holding space for more than one woman’s success, Nicki weaponized her platform to dominate the conversation and drag another woman down with her. It was disappointing, but not unfamiliar.
SZA Chooses Strength Not Spectacle
SZA, on the other hand, didn’t perform her pain for the public. She asserted her peace. Her now-viral tweet reads like a manifesto: “I get bullied by millions online every day then step my ass out onna packed stadium tour where ppl show me REAL love. IN REAL LIFE. My parents are healthy and I’m the most successful I ever been. GET SOME FUCKING PERSPECTIVE n BARK AT THE WALL!!!”

Nicki’s whole online spat with SZA was due to Sza’s little astrological shrug with “Mercury retrograde” tweet. While science doesn’t back the drama planet theory (sorry stargazers), it didn’t stop fans from making it a whole vibe.
What is interesting? Sza never even used Nicki’s name. So why did Nicki choose to lash out like that?
Fans Choose Sides As Twitter Turns Into The Hunger Games
The internet had a field day, treating every tweet like it was the climax of a reality TV reunion. Some fans claimed Nicki Minaj began unraveling the moment Cardi B teased her new album. Others asked the blunt question that cut deep: “Why is Nicki always beefing with artists who have more momentum than her?” SZA currently boasts over 74 million monthly Spotify listeners compared to Nicki’s 46 million, and she’s been racking up Gold and Platinum certifications at a faster clip too. One viral post noted the disparity in buzz: while Nicki holds two diamond-certified singles, SZA leads in total certified units and online streams.
Still, the Barbz didn’t flinch. They defended Nicki’s legacy and insisted SZA threw the first shade. Meanwhile, neutral fans watched the drama unfold like it was appointment television. But beneath the memes and mess, a real question lingered: Is Nicki Minaj okay? Because lately, she seems more focused on feuds than music, and fans are starting to notice.
