Happy Birthday to Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, founder of As Ever, co-founder of Archewell, investor in women-led businesses and executive producer of the Daytime Emmy-nominated With Love, Meghan. Her work spans entrepreneurship, television, philanthropy and advocacy, with a continuing focus on community, families and women’s stories.

As Meghan marked her 45th birthday on August 4, As Ever honoured its founder with a tribute looking back at where her story began. The brand shared a recent portrait alongside a childhood photograph taken in her Los Angeles bedroom around 1987, showing her smiling in pigtails and a striped skirt. “Happy birthday to our founder, @meghan,” the post read, before adding, “Lighting No. 084 to celebrate,” referring to the candle named for her August 4 birthday.

The Real Story vs. The Outrage Machine

Meghan’s birthday once again highlighted the gulf between real life and the online outrage industry. While critics searched for faults in balloons and birthday photographs, one outlet revived the coincidence that Meghan was born on August 4, 1981, exactly one year before Prince William was christened on the same calendar date. Apparently, even an accident of birth can be repackaged as royal drama. By that logic, Barack Obama, who also celebrates his birthday on August 4, should probably apologise too.

Away from the tiny outrage cycle, however, Meghan spent her birthday surrounded by family, supported by people who actually know her, and received public well wishes from a wide range of organisations. It was another reminder that online negativity often says more about the loudest critics than the person they are targeting.

Friends, Brands and Outlets That Publicly Wished Meghan a Happy Birthday

Several friends, businesses and media organisations publicly marked Meghan’s birthday. Photographer Misan Harriman shared a portrait with a warm message, while Restaurant founder Melba Wilson recalled Harry and Meghan’s 2021 visit to her Harlem restaurant and praised their kindness toward the community.

Fox News Entertainment, HELLO! Canada and PinkNews also published birthday posts. PinkNews revisited Meghan’s support for LGBTQ+ equality, highlighting her 2018 remarks at the Commonwealth Youth Forum. Major publications including People and Town & Country marked the occasion with dedicated coverage of her celebration, childhood photograph and As Ever tribute.

Together, the messages offered a striking contrast to hostile online commentary. The dominant response from friends, businesses and much of the media was not controversy, but affection and recognition of Meghan’s work, influence and public life.
