Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has lived under a spotlight where every word is measured against royal protocol, political sensitivity, and cultural expectations. Her latest interview with Emily Chang offered a rare reflection on her political past, her choices today, and why authenticity matters more than performing roles imposed on her. From outspoken remarks in 2016 to her voter advocacy in 2020, Meghan’s path reveals both her willingness to speak and her resolve to define her stance on her own terms.
Meghan Sussex Politics Then and Now
Before her marriage to Prince Harry, Meghan did not hesitate to speak candidly. On the Larry Wilmore show in 2016, she described Donald Trump as divisive, remarks that later resurfaced once she became a member of the royal family. At the time, she was an actress in Los Angeles and free from the rules of royal neutrality.
By 2020, her public voice carried greater weight. She joined Michelle Obama’s When We All Vote initiative, recorded a discussion with Gloria Steinem, and encouraged Americans to reject misinformation and exercise their right to vote. Critics framed her civic advocacy as interference, yet she had avoided endorsing a candidate.
In her conversation with Chang, Meghan explained she has not made political statements since 2016. She described that earlier moment as belonging to a different time and emphasized that her focus now is on choices that feel meaningful for her and her family.
I think right now it’s a really interesting time for the entire world. I just hope people are able to maintain the values that they feel are important to them and to feel safe and to remember our humanity with each other through all of it.

Meghan Sussex’s Accountability and Political Backlash
Meghan’s engagement in civic issues has often been met with disproportionate scrutiny. When she urged her fellow Americans to vote in the 2020 US Presidential elections, commentators accused her of crossing lines of royal neutrality, even though her words echoed calls made by other public figures. Piers Morgan and Dan Wootton accused her of campaigning against Trump, and critics on social media demanded that she lose her titles.

The reaction exposes the unique pressures placed on Meghan and Prince Harry. Other royals voiced political views without facing the same condemnation, but critics held her to an impossible standard. Her involvement in voter registration drives, a basic function of democracy, became grounds for attacks that questioned her legitimacy.
Despite the criticism, Meghan has consistently used her platform to highlight equity and representation. She spoke out on racial justice after the murder of George Floyd. In 2021, she wrote to Congress advocating for paid parental leave, framing it as a matter of economic fairness, and she has repeatedly called for online safety and accountability in digital spaces. Through Archewell, she has also supported humanitarian aid, vaccination equity, and women’s leadership initiatives. While detractors cast her as partisan, her record reflects a consistent focus on accountability, civic responsibility, and systemic change rather than party politics.
Meghan Sussex’s Authenticity and Personal Stance Today
When Meghan spoke at a virtual summit about the murder of George Floyd, she called it a tragedy that demanded accountability. That moment showed her willingness to bring her identity as a biracial Black woman into public spaces that had long excluded voices like hers. But those expecting her to continue as a constant political commentator misread both her role and her reality.
Some people treat Meghan as a sacrificial lamb for their politics, ignoring the risks to her safety. That expectation is troubling. She is not a politician. She is a mother raising two young children while navigating the scrutiny of being married to a man whose father is King, serving as head of state in the UK and several Commonwealth nations. Her circumstances are no longer those of a single actress in Los Angeles; the risks are far greater today.
Calls for Meghan to re-enter partisan politics also ignore the climate she would face. Under Trump 2.0, who has a history of publicly insulting her, any comment could be seized upon as a distraction from his own failures, from the Epstein files to discontent among his base. He would eagerly weaponize her words for headlines and outrage. That risk is real, and it directly endangers her family’s safety.

Final Thoughts
The pressure on Meghan Sussex, to be the voice of resistance speaks to a wider problem. Black women, who carried the weight of change in 2024, have signaled their right to rest and reclaim their well-being. Still, too many expect them to stand at the front of every fight, even when others do not stand with them. Meghan rejects that role. She refuses to be cast as a culture warrior, a Joan of Arc, or a mule for causes that demand her sacrifice without regard for her safety.
This is not abandonment—it is accountability. Meghan’s responsibility lies first with herself and her family, not with those who wish to use her as a symbol. Politicians and institutions hold the power to deliver change; expecting a mother whose existence already sparks hostility to bear that weight is neither fair nor just.
Her political journey shows the impossible double standard faced by women in public life. She has spoken boldly when it mattered and stepped back when her priorities shifted. Critics will continue to demand extremes, but her refusal to conform reveals a deeper truth: her politics cannot be separated from her authenticity.
In a culture that thrives on turning women into symbols, Meghan Sussex’s choice to remain true to herself is not weakness—it is the most powerful stance she can take.

It makes me so happy that Meghan is so secure in who she is that she doesn’t need to follow trends nor do what other people want her to do to feet in their molds.
I enjoyed this interview mostly because as usual, our Meghan, Duchess of Sussex was her intelligent, open, warm, friendly, honest self.
The interviewer is a well regarded journalist and by sheer coincidence, I came across her interview on of Alex Baldwin’s lawyer in his recent trial, over the past weekend. i didn’t know her or anything about her then. But she works for Bloomberg so that has to come with some clout.
That said, I didn’t quite like a couple of her questions, and then the commentary that went with the release. Most notably, her bringing up Meghan’s honest opinion of Trump way back in 2016. Although her answer was appropriately diplomatic, the interviewer must have known that her question would attract some serious attention. Given the fact that certain forces in the UK have been angling for Prince Harry’s immigration situation to be “revealed”, and the fact that the British RF do not “do politics”, and that comment Meghan made was way back pre-RF, why did she feel the need to bring it up today, in 2025?
I think she was looking for a “sound bite” to help blow up her interview. I could have told her that wasn’t necessary because as we all know, every breadth, word, move that our Meghan makes will always attract all kinds of attention. To that end, I am very disappointed that this interviewer took this route – cos it kinda left a bad taste in my mouth – her ulterior motive and all.
I hope that Meghan’s smart response to the question drowns out the deranged and critics soon. Hopefully, they’ll focus on Taylor Swift and her engagement instead. 🙂
