Martha Stewart apparently decided that poverty was a Halloween costume this year. The 85-year-old lifestyle mogul posted a photograph of herself wearing ripped clothes, dirt smeared across her face and holding a sign that read: “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!”
The image appeared in an Instagram carousel promoting Martha’s QVC candles before it was deleted. Screenshots, naturally, survived, and yes, it looked exactly as bad as it sounds.
There is something particularly grotesque about an extraordinarily wealthy woman standing outside one of her properties, surrounded by expensive dogs, pretending to be someone begging for food.

TMZ estimates Martha’s fortune at around $400 million. Whether that figure is exact is almost beside the point. She is rich enough that hunger and housing insecurity exist in a completely different universe from her daily life.
That is what makes this so ugly. People are genuinely struggling to pay rent, buy groceries and keep roofs over their heads. Families are choosing between food and bills. Homelessness is not an aesthetic. Hunger is not a costume, and somebody holding a sign asking strangers for help is not a quirky Halloween character.
It is somebody’s life. This is the kind of thing your parents are supposed to teach you when you are eight: do not punch down at people who have less than you.
Apparently that lesson does not necessarily survive enormous wealth. The costume also appeared in the same carousel Martha used to promote products she sells through QVC, which somehow makes the whole thing feel even more dystopian.
Poverty as set dressing, luxury candles as the commercial break. Also, deleting the photograph does not answer the obvious question: who thought this was a good idea in the first place?

Martha has spent decades building an aspirational brand around beautiful homes, elaborate food, expensive entertaining and domestic perfection. That makes dressing as someone who cannot afford food especially tone-deaf.
The internet reaction was brutal, and understandably so. People called the costume cruel, tasteless and wildly out of touch. Others pointed out that even Martha’s dogs looked disappointed.
Honestly, the dogs had the correct reaction. There are endless things a wealthy celebrity can dress as for Halloween. A witch. A historical figure. A movie character. Martha herself has done elaborate costumes before.
She chose hunger. That is not edgy. It is not clever. It is not dark humour. It is an incredibly privileged person turning someone else’s hardship into entertainment. And if you need thousands of strangers online to explain why that is cruel, deleting the photo is probably the least of your problems.
