The British boy-band singer Lee Ryan seems to be hitting all the wrong notes lately, landing himself in hot water—or should we say court? The 40-year-old singer has just been handed a one-year suspended sentence after being intoxicated and racially abusive on a British Airways flight.

The singer was noticeably drunk after consuming an entire bottle of port before boarding a British Airways flight from Glasgow to London City Airport on July 31 2022.

As if that weren’t enough, Ryan got belligerent when he was cut off from more alcohol mid-flight. He then proceeded to make wildly inappropriate comments about flight attendant Leah Gordon. He called her a “chocolate cookie, ” grabbed her wrists like it’s still 1950, and said he wanted to have her “chocolate children”.

In a previous hearing, Ms. Gordon explained that Ryan had initially complimented her, making remarks about her skin color and saying he wanted to “have your chocolate children.” She felt the comments were racially derogatory and were meant to objectify her.

Ryan, who claimed to have no memory of the incident, confessed to heavy drinking due to a flight delay. Another crew member, Jade Smith noted that Ryan was clearly inebriated and had unsuccessfully demanded an upgrade to business class due to his celebrity status.

Judge’s Verdict: A Hefty Price for Racially Charged Misconduct

Judge Nicholas Wood had zero time for Lee’s antics. While handing out the sentence, he reprimanded Lee by saying that the entire ordeal might’ve been short but felt like an eternity for everyone on the plane. The judge slapped him with £2,500 in compensation to Leah, £750 to crew member named Jade, and £510 for court costs. A hefty bill for bad behavior.

The judge also took into consideration that Lee has high-functioning autism but didn’t think excused his terrible conduct. According to Judge Wood, language that might fly in the entertainment industry doesn’t get a free pass at 30,000 feet.

In the case of Ryan, who was handed a 12-month suspended prison sentence for racially aggravated common assault, the scenario offers a stark reminder of how derogatory language can have serious consequences. Ryan made comments about flight attendant Leah Gordon’s appearance that were not only inappropriate but racially charged. While Ryan may have thought he was paying a compliment, his choice of words mirrored the harmful notion that you can be “pretty for a black girl,” reinforcing racial stereotypes and biases.
