Prince Harry is expected to return to the UK in September for the WellChild Awards and has reportedly been offered accommodation at Buckingham Palace by King Charles, after a previous offer collapsed amid confusion over timing.
During Harry’s July UK visit, his spokesperson announced that he had accepted an invitation to stay at Buckingham Palace. The Palace subsequently said he would not be staying there. Harry’s team described the offer as withdrawn, while Palace-linked reports claimed he had responded after the deadline. He did, however, meet with King Charles and Queen Camilla, alongside Meghan Sussex and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, at Highgrove House.
Harry and Meghan’s security situation has been complicated since they stepped back from royal duties. Harry has not undergone a security assessment since 2019. He must give 28 days’ notice and a detailed itinerary before travelling to the UK, so that officials can assess his security needs on a case-by-case basis. Unlike Taylor Swift or former prime ministers, Harry does not receive the automatic protection he had as a working royal.
Harry has no permanent UK residence after King Charles evicted him and Meghan from Frogmore Cottage in 2023. Meghan’s attendance on the September trip remains uncertain.
King Charles has reportedly extended an olive branch to his estranged son Prince Harry following their private reunion in the UK earlier this month. The monarch will reportedly invite his younger son to stay at Buckingham Palace when he is expected to return to British soil in a matter of weeks. Harry is said to be coming back to the UK in September to coincide with the WellChild Awards.
HELLO! understands that Harry formally rejected the offer from his estranged father ahead of his UK visit, before changing his mind.

A Palace Room Won’t Fix the Problem
The timing is difficult to ignore. After the backlash surrounding Harry’s security, the Buckingham Palace accommodation controversy and the highly visible Sussex visit to Althorp, reports now suggest that Harry may receive a warmer reception during his next UK trip. That does not prove the Government intervened or that his security position has changed, but it does look like Buckingham Palace is attempting to repair the optics after a series of avoidable public-relations failures.
The reported offer of accommodation feels less like a breakthrough and more like compensation after poor treatment. It is the royal equivalent of receiving bad service and being promised a complimentary meal on your next visit. Harry has always been capable of arranging somewhere to stay. The real issue is whether the Palace can offer secure, dependable arrangements without withdrawing them, attaching conditions or using the offer to generate favourable headlines.
Althorp may also have changed the calculation. The Sussex family’s connection to Diana’s childhood home showed that Harry has another place in Britain where his maternal relatives appear willing to welcome him. Buckingham Palace cannot control that relationship, and the image of Harry returning to the Spencer estate with Meghan and their children was far more powerful than another round of anonymous palace briefings.

Clive Alderton’s forthcoming departure adds another layer. Because the King’s principal private secretary represents Charles and Camilla in discussions involving royal protection, his successor could influence the tone surrounding any future security review. It would be premature to claim that Harry will now receive police protection, but a properly conducted reassessment before the end of the year would be significant.
What matters is whether anything substantive changes. A palace room and a sympathetic headline will not resolve the underlying problem. Reliable security, honest communication and an end to the briefing games would.
