Kate Middleton Sits Beside Trump Who Once Spoke Disparagingly About Her and Diana

President Donald Trump’s state visit to the United Kingdom began with ceremony and spectacle. As he stepped off Marine One to be welcomed by the Prince and Princess of Wales, Trump told Kate Middleton, “You’re beautiful, so beautiful.” Hours later, she sat beside him at the state banquet in Windsor, while Prince William held a private meeting with the president. Yet the evening’s grandeur left many unsettled, questioning how the couple could play host to a man with a history of disparaging remarks about both Princess Diana and the Princess of Wales herself.

Trump’s Past Remarks About Princess Diana

Trump’s commentary about Princess Diana continues to overshadow his dealings with the royal family. In a 2000 interview on Howard Stern’s radio show, he declared that he would have “slept with her without hesitation,” but added that she would first need to take an HIV test. The exchange came just three years after Diana’s death.

Her brother, Earl Spencer, has been blunt in response. He wrote that Diana once described Trump in scathing terms, saying she found him creepier than a medical ailment. Biographer Michael Wolff has gone further, stating that both Trump and Jeffrey Epstein competed for Diana’s attention as part of a bid for greater social standing.

Disrespect Toward Kate Middleton

Kate Middleton has also faced Trump’s remarks. In 2012, he tweeted that photographers could profit from topless images of the Duchess sunbathing, writing “Come on Kate.” At the time, the comment drew criticism as demeaning and invasive. Today, those words resurface uncomfortably as she fulfills her royal role by hosting Trump at a banquet.

Final Thoughts

The palace may frame Trump’s visit as diplomacy, but in my view royal protocol cannot erase his record of disrespect. He demeaned Princess Diana and mocked Kate Middleton. To me, William’s decision to dine with a man who degraded both his wife and late mother raises a pressing question: if he cannot defend them, how can he be trusted to defend the nation he will one day lead? I also noticed Kate seemed more animated with Trump and Melania than with other visiting dignitaries. For her liberal fans, that could feel like a rude awakening about who their princess really is. From my perspective, even when a man with a record of insults offered her superficial compliments, she appeared to fawn — a display of what I would call pick-me behavior.
