Jay-Z has filed a lawsuit against a woman who accused him of rape and her attorney, Tony Buzbee, claiming the allegations were false and driven by financial motives. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Alabama, includes claims of defamation, malicious prosecution, conspiracy, and abuse of process.
False Allegations and Retraction
The woman, identified as Jane Doe, accused Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexual assault at a 2000 MTV Video Music Awards after-party. Represented by Buzbee, she filed the lawsuit in December 2024. Jay-Z denied the allegations from the start and refused to settle.

Months later, Doe admitted her claims were false. She stated that Buzbee pressured her into making the accusations. In February 2025, Buzbee dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice, preventing it from being refiled. Despite the retraction, Jay-Z asserts that the damage is already done.
Jay-Z’s Defamation Lawsuit
In his lawsuit, Jay-Z argues that Doe and Buzbee knowingly spread false information to harm his reputation and extort money. He claims they pursued the case despite clear inconsistencies in Doe’s story. The lawsuit states that Doe had a history of filing false claims and had multiple prior accusations dismissed by courts.
Jay-Z also alleges that Buzbee used the media to amplify the allegations, knowing they were not credible. His legal team argues that the case was an attempt to pressure him into a settlement.

Statement from Tony Buzbee
Tony Buzbee, the attorney representing Jane Doe, has pushed back against Jay-Z’s lawsuit, calling it baseless and a tactic to intimidate his client. In a statement, Buzbee denied that Jane Doe ever admitted to fabricating her allegations, insisting she stands by her claims. He accused Jay-Z’s legal team of harassment and coercion, alleging that investigators working for the rapper have tried to pressure Jane Doe into recanting her accusations.
“After speaking with Jane Doe today, it’s clear to me that the quotes attributed to her in the lawsuit are completely made up, or they spoke to someone who isn’t Jane Doe,” Buzbee said.
He claimed that the lawsuit is a deliberate attempt to discredit and silence his client, describing it as a “frivolous case” meant to bully her into submission.
Buzbee alleged that Jay-Z’s team offered payments to individuals to file lawsuits against him and his law firm. He maintained that his client would not be intimidated and vowed to fight the case in court.
Legal and Public Reaction
Jay-Z’s lawsuit has sparked debate about legal ethics and the misuse of sexual assault claims. Some legal experts argue that his case could set a precedent for holding attorneys accountable when they pursue baseless claims. Others caution that defamation lawsuits should not discourage legitimate accusations.
Public reaction remains divided. Supporters say Jay-Z has the right to defend his name and push back against false allegations. Critics worry that high-profile figures suing accusers could make it harder for real victims to come forward.
What Comes Next
Jay-Z’s lawsuit seeks damages and aims to hold Buzbee accountable for what he calls an abuse of the legal system. The case will test how courts handle false accusations and whether they punish attorneys for pursuing cases without credible evidence.
If Jay-Z wins, the ruling could impact how similar cases are handled in the future. For now, he is fighting to clear his name and prevent others from facing similar situations.
