The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is currently experiencing one of the world’s most devastating humanitarian crises, yet it remains largely ignored by the global media and international community. Despite the severity of the situation, the focus of global attention seems to be elsewhere, notably on conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. This silence is deafening, particularly for those on the ground in the DRC, who are facing widespread violence, displacement, and exploitation. This article will explore the crisis in the Congo, the reasons behind the conflict, and why the world appears to be turning a blind eye.
What is Happening in Eastern Congo?
Eastern Congo has been embroiled in conflict for years, with over 100 armed groups, including the notorious M23 rebel group, fighting for control of the region. The violence has led to widespread displacement, with over 1 million people forced to flee their homes in the last few months alone. The United Nations, which has maintained a peacekeeping mission in the region for 25 years, is planning to withdraw by the end of the year at the request of the Congolese government. This withdrawal could leave the region even more vulnerable to further violence.
The conflict in the eastern part of the DRC is driven by various factors, including ethnic tensions, regional disputes, and the presence of valuable mineral resources. Eastern Congo is rich in minerals like cobalt, tungsten, and gold, which are essential for the production of electronics such as smartphones and laptops. This has made the region a hotspot for exploitation by both local and international actors.
The Role of M23 and Regional Complications
The March 23 Movement, or M23, is a rebel group primarily composed of ethnic Tutsis. The group broke away from the Congolese army over a decade ago and has been involved in various offensives, most notably in 2012 when they captured the provincial capital of Goma. M23 has been accused of carrying out mass killings and other human rights violations, adding to the already dire situation in the region.

Both the United Nations and the United States have accused neighboring Rwanda of providing military support to M23, but Rwanda denies the claim. Tensions between Congo and Rwanda have escalated, with both countries blaming each other for the ongoing violence. This is not a new issue; the two countries have had a fraught relationship since the Rwandan genocide of 1994, when hundreds of thousands of Rwandan Hutu refugees fled to the Congo. Among them were soldiers and militiamen responsible for the genocide, further complicating the dynamics in the region.
The Hidden Agenda: The Role of Mineral Resources
At the heart of the conflict in eastern Congo is the battle for control of its vast mineral wealth. The region is home to some of the world’s largest reserves of cobalt, a critical component in the lithium-ion batteries that power electric vehicles and many of our modern electronic devices. As much as 70% of the world’s cobalt supply comes from the DRC, making it a crucial player in the global supply chain.
However, this wealth has come at a tremendous cost to the people of Congo. Armed groups, both local and international, have been vying for control of these resources, often using violence and exploitation to achieve their goals. The involvement of multinational corporations in the mining industry has only exacerbated the situation, with reports of child labor, forced labor, and unsafe working conditions being rampant in the region.

These countries, along with multinational corporations like Apple, Google, Samsung, and Tesla, benefit from the minerals extracted from Congo’s mines. However, this exacts a severe human cost, as many mine workers endure conditions that amount to modern-day slavery.
How Media and Global Leaders Ignore Congo’s Crisis Despite Calls for Change
Despite the severity of the crisis in Congo, it remains largely overlooked by the international community. Global media has devoted minimal attention to the conflict, instead focusing on other high-profile geopolitical issues. This lack of coverage has allowed the situation in Congo to worsen, with little pressure on international actors to address the root causes of the conflict.

She placed her hand in front of her mouth and pointed two fingers at her temple, symbolizing the silence surrounding the violence in her country. Her actions drew attention to the plight of her people, but the world remained largely indifferent.
Earlier this year, actress and activist Danai Gurira addressed the United Nations, calling for accountability and cultural change within conflict zones. In her powerful speech, she highlighted the atrocities committed by powerful commanders who act with impunity, the terror inflicted by soldiers without facing consequences, and the uncontrolled military operations permitted by governments. Gurira stressed that the problem extends beyond the proliferation of guns—it is the lack of effective deterrence that fuels the escalating crisis. She pointed to the alarming rise in gender-based violence in conflict zones, calling for urgent action to address the gendered roots of violence and militarization. Gurira emphasized that advancing gender-responsive arms control and disarmament is crucial to reducing the proliferation of weapons that enable such violence.
“Right now, a child in Eastern Congo needs us to keep attacking this issue and bringing truth to power,” Gurira stated in her briefing to the United Nations Security Council. “She needs us to be relentless and unstoppable, or she continues a life of unspeakable suffering.” – Danai Gurira

Breaking the Silence
The crisis in Congo is a deeply complex issue, rooted in ethnic tensions, regional power struggles, and the ruthless exploitation of the country’s abundant mineral resources. While the international community has largely chosen to look away, we cannot afford to do the same. The people of Congo deserve more than our sympathy; they deserve our action. We must collectively amplify their voices and draw global attention to the suffering that has persisted for far too long.
Addressing the crisis in Congo goes beyond providing humanitarian aid. It demands a comprehensive approach that tackles the underlying causes of the conflict. This requires holding multinational corporations accountable for exploiting Congo’s resources and ensuring the country’s wealth benefits its people instead of enriching foreign interests.Furthermore, there must be a focus on advancing sustainable peace, including disarmament and gender-responsive strategies to address the root causes of violence.
The world can no longer afford to ignore Congo. This ongoing silence is a form of complicity. It’s time for the global community to stand up, take responsibility, and work toward meaningful change for the people of Congo. The silence must end.⬤
