Elon Musk is proof that money can buy platforms, rockets and attention, but it cannot buy dignity. This is a man in his fifties, richer than some countries, and he is still online throwing teenage insults at a respected historian because that historian enjoyed Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.

And let’s be clear. The Tom Holland in question is not even Spider‑Man. It is Tom Holland, the historian, author of Dynasty: The Rise and Fall of the House of Caesar and co‑host of The Rest Is History podcast. But expecting Elon Musk to pause, read properly and understand context may be asking too much.

Musk posted the blunt remark, “Tom Holland is such a cuck,” on X without any additional context. The post quickly attracted millions of views, with users attempting to determine which Tom Holland Musk meant, the British actor who plays Telemachus in Nolan’s adaptation, or the historian who had just written a glowing review.

The Confusion Was Instant

Many initially assumed Musk was referring to the Spider‑Man star, who portrays Telemachus in Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic poem. Others pointed out that the timing more closely aligned with a viral post from historian Tom Holland, who had praised the film after attending an early screening.

The confusion only added to the online discussion, with memes and jokes spreading rapidly across X as users tried to determine the target of Musk’s comment. One user joked: “You can just imagine the Spiderman Tom Holland scrolling on X and spitting his cereal across the table when he saw the post thinking it was about him”. Another simply wrote: “Elon 100% thought this was Spider‑Man”.

The Historian’s Response Was Perfect

Historian Tom Holland had written: “More praise for The Odyssey from people who – shockingly – have actually waited to see it before giving their opinion”. He also called the film “by some way the best cinematic adaptation of a Greek myth I have ever seen”.

When Musk fired back, Holland did not retreat. He quote‑tweeted Musk and wrote:

He later added: “My last comment on this whole business (which I hadn’t realised was a lightning rod for an entire culture war) – if you like Nolan’s other films, you will love The Odyssey. If you didn’t like them, then miss it.”

That is how an adult responds to a childish insult. With dignity, clarity and without descending into name‑calling.

Insecurity with a Wi‑Fi Connection

The whole thing is embarrassing. A grown billionaire saw someone praise The Odyssey and responded like a man who has spent too much time in the worst corner of the internet. “Cuck” is not criticism. It is not wit or cultural analysis. It is the vocabulary of men who confuse cruelty with personality.

What makes it even funnier is that these are the same people who scream about freedom of speech every five minutes. Yet the second artists cast a Black woman, a trans actor, or anyone outside their narrow fantasy of “acceptable” culture, they want to police art like hall monitors with podcast microphones. Musk has previously accused Nolan of compromising his artistic integrity over casting decisions, claiming Nolan “desecrated the Odyssey so that he could get the Academy Award”. He has criticised the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and trans actor Elliot Page.

Funny how nobody lost their minds when Denzel Washington played Keanu Reeves’s brother in Much Ado About Nothing. The “free speech” crowd suddenly wants to police casting, adaptation and imagination. Freedom for them; censorship for everyone else. They are not defending Homer. They are defending their own bigotry. The outrage over The Odyssey has been ridiculous from the start. Mythology has been retold, reshaped and reimagined for centuries. But the moment Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya and Elliot Page are involved, the self-appointed guardians of Western civilisation act as though Nolan personally burned Greece to the ground.

Final Thoughts

And then there is the irony. Elon Musk could be doing almost anything with his money. He could fund schools or solve real problems. He could even commission the all‑white, all‑male, Daily Wire‑approved Odyssey of his dreams. But instead, he is online insulting a historian for liking a movie, proving that money cannot buy dignity. That is insecurity with a Wi‑Fi connection.

The richest man in the world should not be this bored, this bitter or this desperate for approval. Yet here we are, watching a man with unlimited resources act like the least popular boy at the lunch table, trying to make the edgelords laugh.

If anything, Elon attacking Tom Holland says more about Tom than Elon intended. Being insulted by Musk at this point feels like a badge of honour. It usually means you said something normal, humane or mildly intelligent, and that was enough to upset the billionaire grievance machine.
