Dr Margaret Ikpoh stepped down from Sentebale less than a week after joining the charity’s board. A respected GP from East Yorkshire, she accepted the trustee role on 25 March and resigned on 2 April. The charity blamed “intense and sustained media scrutiny” for her abrupt exit. Yet, her rapid departure signals deeper issues within Sentebale’s leadership under its current chair.
Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso co-founded Sentebale in 2006 to support children and young people affected by HIV in Lesotho and Botswana. But since Sophie Chandauka became chair, the organization has spiraled into public controversy. Ikpoh’s resignation now adds to growing concerns about who is truly driving change—and who is paying the price.

New Trustee Entered At A Volatile Moment
Ikpoh joined Sentebale at a moment of upheaval. Prince Harry, Prince Seeiso, and the entire original board resigned earlier this year. They cited a complete breakdown in trust with Chandauka, who had recently filed legal claims against the charity and publicly accused its former leadership of bullying, misogyny, and governance failures.
Sentebale framed Ikpoh’s resignation as a personal decision tied to professional and family obligations. However, the timing tells another story. Her appointment came during an escalating crisis, and her name quickly appeared in reporting that connected her to Chandauka’s growing network of allies inside the organization.
Observers questioned whether Ikpoh understood the full scope of the conflict when she accepted the role. She appeared alongside Chandauka at a 2024 Royal Salute polo event, and that image, now circulating online, has fueled criticism that Chandauka stacked the board with close friends and professional contacts.

Financial Red Flags And Reputational Risk
Under Chandauka’s leadership, Sentebale directed a considerable sum in consultancy fees to individuals within her circle. Between June 2023 and January 2024, the charity allocated £427,497 to consultants—many with personal or business ties to Chandauka. Among them were her former Morgan Stanley colleague Sarah Essien, her brother Dr Tinashe Chandauka, and Iain Rawlinson, who received tens of thousands in payments.
The Charity Commission has since opened a regulatory compliance case. Investigators are examining whether current and former trustees have met their legal duties. Ikpoh’s sudden resignation, though officially unrelated, cannot be separated from the larger storm engulfing the organization.
She may have realized that remaining on the board would put her professional standing at risk. As a high-profile healthcare leader, Ikpoh likely understood the reputational costs of staying tied to a board under investigation. Some believe she stepped away to avoid long-term fallout, while others suggest she may have been misled about the charity’s internal strife.
Meanwhile, media outlets that once championed Chandauka’s reformist image have ignored Ikpoh’s resignation entirely. Their silence stands in stark contrast to the headlines that dominated when Prince Harry and his board stepped down. This selective coverage continues to expose the press bias and narrative control.

A Warning Sign For Sentebale’s Future
Ikpoh’s brief tenure exposes cracks in Chandauka’s leadership and points to wider discontent among those recruited to legitimize her direction. Her resignation is not an isolated incident. It reflects growing discomfort within the boardroom and signals a crisis of confidence in the current regime.
Sentebale was built to serve vulnerable communities. That mission now risks being overshadowed by controversy, alleged cronyism, and legal distractions. Unless leadership restores transparency and accountability, more resignations may follow—and the charity’s core purpose could be lost in the fallout.
