Chris Brown and his company, Black Pyramid LLC, have been ordered to pay nearly $13 million to his former housekeeper, Maria Avila, after a Los Angeles jury found them liable for negligence over a 2020 dog attack that left her severely injured.

The attack happened while Avila was working outside Brown’s Tarzana, California, home. She was mauled by Hades, a 200-pound Caucasian Shepherd reportedly kept for security. Court testimony described permanent facial disfigurement, scarring, vision problems, nerve damage and trauma that left Avila unable to return to housekeeping work.

According to reports, Avila was awarded $12.9 million. Her sister, Patricia Avila, received $885,000 for emotional distress, while Avila’s husband, Oscar Olivo, received $50,000.

Here is what Variety reported:

According to her attorney, Brown and his company, Black Pyramid LLC, are on the hook to pay $12.9 million to Maria Avila for negligence. Avila’s sister, Patricia Avila, who was also on the job when the mauling took place, was awarded $885,000 for emotional distress, and Maria Avila’s husband, Oscar Olivo, was separately awarded $50,000.

Brown had claimed that the dog was kept for security purposes and was not his personal pet. Jurors may have been swayed by testimony that indicated that, rather than call 911 himself or attend to Avila, Brown fled the bloody scene and drove around for hours while leaving those duties to employees, saying that he was afraid there would be a “media circus” if his voice were heard on the call or if he were around when police arrived.

Maria Avila offered tearful recollections of the traumatic incident and her less-than-full recovery on the stand last week, speaking in Spanish with an interpreter. According to an account of her testimony in Rolling Stone, Avila was left with severe scarring on her face and left arm, with limited mobility after surgeons grafted skin from her abdomen to repair her arm. She has not been able to return to work as a housekeeper, it was stated in testimony, because of lacking the arm strength to carry out the job, as well as post-traumatic stress that keeps her from being able to be around dogs kept by clients as pets.

Brown testified that he had been about to shower when he heard the dog growling and rushed down to find Avila lying motionless amid “a lot of blood” from the attack. “The blood kind of freaked me out,” he said, recalling the sight when Avila was able to roll over. “I’m in shock,” he said, according to Rolling Stone, explaining why he followed his manager’s advice to leave the scene before first responders arrived.

Talent Does Not Erase Chris Brown’s Pattern Of Harm

Chris Brown has had a long, public pattern of violence, legal trouble and disturbing allegations around him for years. In 2009, Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault after attacking Rihanna. In 2014, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault in Washington, D.C. People keep asking how someone like this still has such a loyal fanbase, but the answer is uncomfortable. A lot of people do not care about violence against women when the man is talented, attractive or famous enough. If he looked like Harvey Weinstein, his career would have ended after Rihanna. But because he can dance, because people find him desirable, and because nostalgia does a lot of emotional labour, the excuses keep coming.

The excuses are always the same. “Rihanna moved on.” “That was years ago.” “Separate the art from the artist.” “He has changed.” Changed into what exactly? Because the headlines keep finding him. What also bothers me is how many women still cape for him. Paying hard-earned money in 2026 to watch Chris Brown spin around on stage is not the flex people think it is. There are too many artists in the world to keep rewarding a man with this kind of history.

The dog situation adds another ugly layer. People get large, powerful animals for image, intimidation or “security,” then fail to treat the animal responsibly. When someone gets hurt, everyone acts shocked. That poor woman suffered. The dog suffered too. Yet the person with the money, power and platform still gets to keep moving. That is the pattern. Chris Brown has been given more second chances than most people get first chances. Every time, the public is asked to forget, forgive or move on because he can perform.
