Independent TD Catherine Connolly has been elected as Ireland’s 10th president after winning over 63% of the national vote. The result marks a decisive shift in Irish politics and one of the largest presidential victories in the country’s history.

Counting finished at Dublin Castle on Saturday evening. Connolly received 914,143 votes, well above the quota of 721,350. Her closest rival, Heather Humphreys of Fine Gael, won 424,987 votes. Fianna Fáil’s Jim Gavin finished third with 103,568.

A Record Win and a Clear Mandate

Connolly’s campaign was powered by a coalition of left-leaning parties, including Sinn Féin, Labour, the Social Democrats, and People Before Profit. Supporters cheered as results confirmed her lead in every constituency except Cavan-Monaghan.

“I will be a president who listens and reflects,” she said in her victory speech. “A voice for peace, for neutrality, and for the existential challenge of climate change. Together we can shape a new republic that values everybody.”

Outgoing president Michael D. Higgins congratulated her and called the result “a clear and democratic mandate.” Taoiseach Micheál Martin praised Connolly’s campaign, describing her election as “an outstanding honour bestowed by the people.”

Spoiled Ballots Reflect Frustration

More than 213,000 ballots were spoiled, many containing protest messages. The total marked a national record and reflected growing discontent with establishment politics. Turnout stood at 46%, with over 1.6 million ballots cast.

Connolly addressed both voters and abstainers in her remarks. “To those who did not vote for me and those who spoiled their votes, I will be an inclusive president who listens to all of you,” she said.

A New Chapter for Ireland

Connolly’s victory signals a political shift toward social justice and inclusion. Her presidency will focus on unity, equality, and environmental responsibility. She will take office on November 11, becoming Ireland’s first female independent president.

As she told supporters at Dublin Castle, “Use your voice in every way you can, because together we can build a republic that values everyone.”
