Martha Stewart might have been better off apologizing and leaving this story alone. Instead, we now have another explanation for that disastrous Halloween costume in which the 85-year-old multimillionaire dressed as a homeless person, smeared dirt across her face and held a sign reading, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!” This time, Craig Melvin somehow enters the story.
Speaking Tuesday at the CrossCountry Mortgage Sales Rally in Orlando, Martha explained that the Today co-anchor accidentally spilled chocolate on the sweater she had planned to wear to a Halloween party. According to Martha, she then had only about 10 minutes to come up with another costume.
Her solution? She looked at her clothes, decided she resembled what she called a “bum,” dirtied herself up and made the “I’m hungry” sign.

So Craig spilled chocolate on a sweater. How exactly does that lead to pretending to be homeless? That is where this explanation gets stranger, because it is not the explanation Martha originally gave.
After the photograph went viral, Martha initially said she had intended the costume to “bring more awareness” to homelessness. She also highlighted her charitable work and said homelessness was an issue she cared deeply about.

Hours later, after that defense went down about as well as you would expect, Martha acknowledged that her response had not gone far enough. She apologized, called the costume insensitive and said it was not funny.
That should probably have been the end of it. Instead, days later, we are hearing that she had ten minutes, Craig Melvin ruined her sweater and dressing as a homeless person was simply the easiest option available. Martha needs to pick a lane.
Was this a deliberately constructed attempt to raise awareness about homelessness, or was it a last-minute costume born because somebody got chocolate on your clothes?
Both explanations cannot really carry the same weight, and there is another detail that makes that original “raising awareness” defense difficult to swallow. Martha included the photograph in an Instagram carousel promoting her QVC candles, writing that the candles were “perfect for Halloween.” So the awareness campaign somehow arrived inside a product promotion. That is one impressive coincidence.

The problem was never simply that Martha wore torn clothing. It was the decision to turn hunger and homelessness into a visual gag while standing in the extraordinarily comfortable position of being Martha Stewart.
People actually hold signs asking strangers for food because they are hungry. People sleep outside because they have nowhere safe to go. Those circumstances are not props.
And when you make a mistake this obvious, the smartest response is often very simple: apologize, acknowledge why it hurt people, learn something and move on.
Instead, Martha keeps digging. First the costume was advocacy. Then came the apology. Now we have the chocolate-sweater defense.
Craig Melvin did not make Martha Stewart write “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!” on a sign. Sometimes the simplest explanation is also the most uncomfortable one: it was a terrible costume idea, and no amount of chocolate is going to make it better.
