Hispanic and Latino/a individuals often navigate a workplace where their racial and ethnic identities influence their career progression. The study highlights how “white-passing-ness” can affect perceptions of representation and acceptance within the professional sphere.
Economic Disparities
A concerning 45% of Latina professionals reported not receiving equitable pay, pointing to significant gender and ethnic wage gaps. Additionally, many report salaries insufficient to support their families, underlining severe financial inequities.
Experiences of Discrimination and Identity Challenges
Hispanic and Latino/a professionals frequently face microaggressions related to immigration and racial stereotypes. About 42% feel unrecognized by their own ethnic community in professional settings, complicating their workplace identity. The findings show that Hispanic and Latino/a professionals are often stereotyped as overly emotional or loud, with 40% feeling pressured to alter their natural behaviors to succeed. The study reveals disparities in leadership representation, with those perceived as White or having lighter skin feeling more adequately represented than their darker-skinned counterparts.
