Belize, Jamaica, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines have successfully eliminated mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis. This notable achievement, certified by the World Health Organization (WHO), marks a critical step forward in the global effort to combat these diseases.
Collaborative Efforts Lead to Success
A recent celebratory event in Kingston, Jamaica, organized by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and supported by UNICEF and UNAIDS, highlighted this success. Health ministers from the three countries gathered to mark the occasion. Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, PAHO Director, credited the hard work and collaboration between governments, health professionals, and communities for this achievement.
I commend the dedication and commitment of healthcare workers on achieving certification by the World Health Organization (WHO) of the dual elimination of mother to child transmission (EMTCT) of HIV and syphilis. This achievement signals to the world that ending paediatric HIV and congenital syphilis through the elimination of mother to child transmission of HIV and syphilis is achievable. The Ministry will continue to work towards ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.”
St. Clair Jimmy Prince, Minister of Health, Wellness and the Environment of St Vincent and the Grenadines
Strategic Health Initiatives and Overcoming Pandemic Challenges
The nations demonstrated resilience by maintaining essential health services throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This persistence has been crucial in ensuring the continuity of prevention and treatment programs.
Initiatives to eliminate these transmissions have included updating health guidelines and improving screening and treatment within maternal and child health services. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus commended Belize, Jamaica, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines for their integration of primary health care and strong national laboratory systems.
The PAHO Elimination Initiative
Though receiving certification is an accomplishment, keeping this status requires constant vigilance to prevent new infections. WHO and its partners are committed to supporting continued health system strengthening and comprehensive service provision across the Americas.
The PAHO Elimination Initiative, relaunched during the organization’s 60th Directing Council, aims to eradicate over 30 communicable diseases by 2030. This initiative uses lessons from past health crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, to advance disease elimination efforts in the region.
Future Outlook
The elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis by these Caribbean countries sets a powerful example. It shows that with dedicated effort and international cooperation, significant public health milestones are attainable. These successes inspire other nations to pursue similar health goals, aiming for a future where no child is born with HIV or syphilis.
